“Renaissance” Sauvignon Bianco Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2020
Sauvignon Blanc Renaissance Riserva is only bottled in the best vintages and is wildly floral and herbaceous with nuances of green apple and ginger. The palate is round and supple with ripe orchard fruits emphasised by salty minerals, while the lively acidity retains a beautiful inner freshness. Here, the aromatic spectrum of the grape variety is expressed in the very best way - it finishes strongly with a spicy note that lingers for a long time. Great Sauvignon cinema! SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling, light green-yellow in colour. Very expressive nose with notes of grapefruit and pineapple, plus spicy thyme and some tomato green, which adds tension. Fills the palate full, juicy fruit paired with fine spicy notes, radiant and long." Falstaff
"Inviting aromas of minerals and woody notes, then peppers, lemon, apple and plenty of oak on the palate." Decanter
"The 2020 Sauvignon Blanc Riserva Renaissance begins with a reductive note of lit matches and pencil shavings. The wine matures in oak and on lees to offer a full-bodied mouthfeel with accents of ripe nectarine, lemon and stone fruit. The reductive note diminishes but does not disappear completely. Only 3,000 bottles were produced." Wine Advocate
"Crushed stone, curry leaves and sage give way to musky dried peaches and apricots as the 2020 Sauvignon Blanc Riserva Renaissance blossoms in the glass. It is youthfully coiled and intense, with a dense, silky wave of ripe pit fruit and exotic spices, underscored by salty minerals and savoury spice. The palate is characterised by primary concentration, with a tart lemon zest resonating. The best is yet to come." Vinous
"A wonderful Sauvignon Riserva that benefits from the spectacular microclimate of the Isarco Valley at the foot of the Sciliar. On the nose, notes of white melon, wild rosemary, a hint of cedar and elderflower. Salty on the palate, with a fruity, citrusy finish." Luca Gardini

“Renaissance” Pinot Nero Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2019
Bright, medium ruby colour with a brightening rim. Pinot Nero Renaissance Riserva opens smoky in the glass, with fine aromas of wild strawberries, blackberries and sage. On the palate, it soothes with its soft textures, which are enriched by salty, mineral tones and tart wild berry fruits. Very polished tannins, complex and multi-layered with further aeration, yet highly aristocratic. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling, medium-dense ruby colour with a light rim. Opens with smoky, spicy components, then lots of raspberry, some pomegranate, exciting. Spreads out on the palate with lots of juicy fruit, raspberry and sour cherries, fine-meshed, dense ruby, spreads out for a long time, good tension." Falstaff
"The 2019 Riserva Pinot Noir Renaissance is extremely bright and focused, with a beautiful bouquet that shows elements of roses, wild berries, blood orange, crushed slate, smoke and camphor ash. The flavours are outstanding and the wine continues on the palate with medium intensity. Only 3,000 bottles were produced." Wine Advocate
"The 2019 Pinot Noir Riserva Renaissance is decidedly savoury, with a spicy blend of dried cherries accented by ground ginger, cloves and grilled herbs. It glides effortlessly across the palate, silky and round, with lively acidity and mineral tones giving way to tart red and black fruits. The finish is medium-long and slightly tannic. A hint of sour citrus gradually fades." Vinous

Markus Prackwieser is undoubtedly one of those winemakers who have a clear vision of what they want to create. In 2000, the South Tyrolean took over the long-established estate from his father Johann, who until then had sold his entire harvest to cooperatives. Markus, who was 28 years old at the time, decided to go new ways from there on and process his grapes himself. Today he produces wines that authentically express the unique landscape and the people who produced them.
"Anyone who is as intensively involved in growing grapes as I am always has the finished product in mind, and I wanted to make the wine exactly as I imagined it," Markus tells us in conversation. His Gump Hof winery is located east of Bolzano in beautiful South Tyrol. Here, the vines grow at 350-550 metres above sea level on the steep slopes of the southern Valle Isarco, which even today can only be cultivated through painstaking manual labour.
The Gump Hof comprises 10 hectares of vineyards, which are particularly sought-after because Mediterranean influences literally meet the coolness of the Dolomites here: During the day, the Ora wind from Lake Garda provides a warm, sunny climate, while the winds from the snow-covered Dolomites cool the grapes down again at night. These climatic peculiarities benefit the development of the aroma and, above all, preserve the typical crisp acidity that we love so much in South Tyrolean wines.
Markus tells us that the hard work on the steep slopes has always been a great source of motivation - and for which the wine has always rewarded him. If you take a look at his versatile white and red wines, it immediately becomes clear that the winemaker is not afraid to continue the old traditions of the farm while trying out new techniques and styles. "I like to face challenges and this is reflected in my wine," explains the ambitious winemaker.
Inspired by other growing regions such as Austria's Wachau or the Loire in France, Markus has divided his precious range into three lines: Mediaevum, Praesulis and Renaissance. The Sauvignon Bianco, Pinot Blanc and Vernatsch Mediaevum are fermented in stainless steel and are wonderfully accessible everyday wines. The four Praesulis wines, on the other hand - a spicy Pinot Noir and three elegant whites - are much more complex and therefore ideal companions for heartier dishes. Finally, in the best years, Markus also produces his three Renaissance wines (Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc), which spend a whole year refining on their lees in Tonneaux barrels.
The Gump Hof is a small but fine family winery that can definitely compete with the big South Tyrolean cooperatives. After the tasting, it was clear to us that it is above all the wines themselves that prove that Markus Prackwieser knows exactly what he is doing. SUPERIORE.DE
