"Massetino is considered the second wine of Masseto, but I am slowly coming to the conclusion that it is much more than that. It accounts for about a third of Masseto's production, and judging by the quality of this 2022, next year's Grand Vin release could be absolutely phenomenal. Massetino has always contained a proportion of Cabernet Franc since its first vintage in 2017 - 10% in 2022. A cool and dry spring led to a slightly delayed budbreak, followed by 75 days of drought and high temperatures. Summer thunderstorms finally brought balance, and the cool September evenings were perfect for bringing the grapes to full ripeness. Each parcel was vinified separately and spontaneously in concrete tanks before malolactic fermentation took place in barriques. The wine is bright and stony, it has a lot of energy. It is lively and flavoursome, combining fresh Mediterranean herbs and balanced fruit, with more verticality than the Masseto 2021 and just as much concentration. Incredible precision and beautiful freshness, especially considering the vintage." Decanter

Harvested a little later than usual, the 2019 Masseto benefited from the sunny, mild climate at the beginning of September, which gave it richness and balance at the same time. Its youthful colour foreshadows a rich and intense wine. On the nose, brave notes of ripe cherries, violets, liquorice and bitter chocolate. On the palate, it spans a large peacock's wheel around the voluminous fruit core; as it progresses, it shows itself envelopingly lush with its velvety and fine tannins. 2017 was the very first vintage of Massetino. It was launched in 2019, exactly 30 years after the first Massetino vintage. Each original 6-bottle wooden crate of the 2021 Ornellaia vintage contains a bottle with the coveted collector's label "La Generosità".

The spectacular artist edition "Vendemmia d'Artista" has been in existence since 2006. Every year, renowned artists are invited to design a small series of individual and large bottles of the world-famous Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore and create an artistic world around the fine wine. This year's edition bears the name "La Generosità - Generosity". This is how Ornellaia has christened the 2021 vintage.

The artist Marinella Senatore has interpreted this character trait imaginatively and transformed the pride and dedication of the people who vinify this top wine into impressive art. She says: "I have studied Ornellaia long and hard. Here, the elements of nature such as the sea, wind and stars combine with the energy of the people who work here, and completely new connections are created." From these observations, she created unique collages that adorn 100 double magnum bottles, among other things. The artist interprets the theme of generosity in the form of artistic representations of the hands of the men and women who passionately pursue their vocation day after day. The symbolism of dance as a further element symbolises a lively community and the strong cohesion of the team.

Once again this year, a large part of the impressive special edition will be auctioned off at Sotheby's to find its way into the hands of lucky collectors. The proceeds will go to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation to support the innovative "Mind's Eye" programme. And for a very good cause, as the programme offers people with visual impairments the opportunity to discover and experience contemporary art without barriers.

The 15th edition of the Ornellaia Vendemmia d'Arstista is called "La Proporzione" and for estate director Axel Heinz, this title sums up the essence of the vintage, which is characterised by cold and rain as well as long periods of heat:

For this edition of Vendemmia d'Artista, American artist Joseph Kosuth has interpreted the character of Ornellaia 2020 "La Proporzione" and created a series of conceptual artworks. Kosuth's interpretation is expressed in a project that evolves from the labels of the 750 ml bottles as well as double magnum and imperial bottles to the site-specific artworks in the winery itself. On the Vendemmia d'Artista label of a 750-ml bottle, each found on a bottle in a case of 6, a quotation from Vitruvius (De architectura 3.1.3) is engraved in English on paper. On the other hand, the etymological family tree of the word "vino" is placed in relief on the bottle of the 100 double magnums.

As every year, the majority of the noble special editions will be auctioned at Sotheby's in autumn to get into the hands of lucky collectors. The proceeds are donated to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation to support the innovative "Mind's Eye" programme. In the meantime, more than two million dollars have been donated to charitable causes since the launch of the Vendemmia d'Artista. An impressive success that gives blind or visually impaired people the opportunity to discover and experience contemporary art.

"As usual, the intense ruby red Ornellaia 2020 reveals notes of ripe berry fruits and light hints of vanilla and sweet tobacco on the nose. The wine has a velvety soft texture and a pleasant, enveloping mouthfeel that invites a second sip. Its dense yet elegant tannin structure carries the tasty, beautifully persistent final." Pure bouquet of red fruits, mocha, spices, cassis, blood orange and tobacco, very finesse for its youth. In the background, very restrained maquis, white smoke and traces of liquorice. Clear and firm on the palate, only gradually revealing a terrific structure and its perfect proportions, fanning out fruit, tannins and a harmonious acidity. "This Ornellaia impresses already in the fragrance with a rather puristic, "luscious" bouquet - again more in the elegant Bordeaux style instead of with "Californian" airs and graces as in the past. At the same time, it remains true to its extremely spicy, ethereal, thoroughly Mediterranean vein, i.e. a typical Ornellaia of the more modern years. The clear fruit varies from red to blueberry, underpinned by a wonderful smoky-tobacco graphite note, with hints of cinnamon and sandalwood behind it. Elegant palate with linear orientation, good depth, rather elegant than concentrated, lots of tobacco spice, still very delicate BSA notes, calm and precise, tightly woven, extremely finely contoured final with firm tannic grip. "Deep, brilliant crimson. Very lush nose followed by a hedonistic palate that finishes particularly fresh. Ripe but not too ripe fruit - a drier (much less sweet) vintage than usual that should age well. Unusually, there is a residual tannin on the finish. "The winery's director, Axel Heinz, described the 2020 as "a classic Ornellaia" and chose the theme "La Proporzione" (proportion) to describe its character. Indeed, the blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot marks a return to a more typical blend after the pendulum swung to 62% Cabernet Sauvignon in 2019 and 51% Merlot in 2018. Fine-grained and beautifully structured, its finely integrated tannins support a concentration of black fruits brightened by red berries. Aromas of black cherry, liquorice, dark chocolate, cedar and damp earth make for a fragrant wine, accompanied by menthol and balsamic notes that permeate the wine and give it plenty of freshness. The finish reveals a stony and salty element, along with chocolaty and woody hints. It is dense and tasty, its ripe fruit combined with freshness and structure cleverly telling the story of this vintage, which ripens earlier. In the mouth it lacks complexity - time will tell - but the variety of flavours gives a hint of what is to come." Decanter

"This is a beauty, so generous and opulent with completely seamless transitions. The wine's traditional blend is mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, although this warm vintage comes with a pinch less Cabernet Sauvignon. Fruit is selected from 107 hectares of Ornellaia vines, with the winery recently acquiring a further eight hectares next to Guado al Tasso in Castagneto Carducci, with terraces and vines aged between 15 and 28 years. After many years of identifying the best Merlot, Cabernet and Petit Verdot parcels within the boundaries of their Bolgheri estate with the support of the famous oenologist Michel Rolland, the Antinori family discovered in the early 2000s that in the midst of this microclimate and terroir there was an even more special micro-vineyard whose results once again surpassed those of the larger area. It was immediately clear to all involved that this unique character had to be vinified and highlighted separately - this was the birth of today's cult wine Lodovico.

Strong ruby with a black core. Intense and dense nose, opens with blackberry, mulberry and dark currant, tobacco and dark pepper in the background. Polished and velvety in attack and course, shows lots of juicy fruit, dark berries, fine-meshed, very polished tannin, radiates for a long time with a rich finish. Just 7,000 bottles were produced in 2017 from the single vineyard Vigna Lodovico of Tenuta di Biserno. Every year, the wine is a true icon of western Tuscany in terms of expression and complexity and is only allocated to a hand-picked number of importers each year. SUPERIORE.DE

"This is the headline wine from Lodovico Antinori's Tenuta di Biserno. The hot vintage 2017 Lodovico shows a rich and deeply saturated color with elegant tones of dark fruit, spice, rum cake, dried plum, jerky, charred meat and cured tobacco. Like the Biserno, this special vineyard selection reveals slightly less depth and dimension in terms of mouthfeel. That more compact palate is a common feature of the 2017 vintage in which hard work and severe fruit selection was achieved in order to counter the jammy concentration of the berries. This remains a big wine, however, with the balanced and bright acidity that is a crucial indicator of the wine's undeniable quality and pedigree." Wine Advocate

Sassicaia 2020 is in one word: magical. Even at a young age, it shows an aromatic richness and intensity that inspires us. The optimal climate has favoured its very Mediterranean character, and so here presents a fresh and very direct wine that delights all the senses. "Medium purple red, the bottom of the glass is clearly visible. Intense nose with a hint of iodine. Great spiciness that seems more Tuscan than Bordeaux. Long lasting with a very long finish. Embryonic but convincing that it has a bright future ahead of it. Subtle rather than showy. I wouldn't guess it was 14%. I aerated it and left it in a young wine decanter for an hour and it was a delight. It has more appeal than many previous vintages." Jancis Robinson

"The 2020 Sassicaia is a real beauty and shows great purity, elegance and silkiness. On the nose, it is a typical, noble Sassicaia with the typical liaison of Cabernet and Mediterranean spice, reminiscent of the neighbouring maquis forest. There are notes of lavender, but also Mediterranean herbs such as sage, myrrh and rosemary, refined with dark cherries, cassis, wild berries, graphite, tobacco and earth. Also in the mouth with noble restraint, the fine fruit presence is majestically underpinned by earthy and herbaceous notes, even a touch of olive tapenade resonates. Despite the present fruit, it appears fresh thanks to its penetrating acidity, with a silky texture and an elegant, grippy tannin structure. "The Tenuta San Guido 2020 Bolgheri Sassicaia appeals to those seeking a more lush, opulent and ultimately approachable wine. This vintage is an accurate reflection of coastal Tuscany, as opposed to a more generic 'Tuscan' wine from other parts of this great central Italian region. You can taste the ripeness and soft fruit weight that come from a coastal appellation with particularly bright light and warm Mediterranean breezes. Sassicaia from the cool vintages is notoriously a reticent wine in its early years, needing a long lead time before it settles into an ideal drinking window. That is definitely not the case here. This wine is beautiful and compelling from the start. It shows a beautiful blend of dark fruits, oak spice, balanced freshness, rich texture, soft tannins and a skilfully controlled alcohol level of 14%. The immediate character of the wine is what makes this vintage stand out and I wouldn't get too hung up on over-ambition for cellaring. The wine is a pure pleasure as it is, with overwhelming primary fruit and high intensity in the near and medium term." Wine Advocate

"A very fragrant Sassicaia on the nose with forest floor, citrus and dark fruits. Blackcurrants. Cedarwood and black tea. Some balsamic. Pine needles. Full and very juicy. Very long, structured and complete. Spicy and energetic with a linear line of fresh tannins and acidity. Very Sassicaia throughout. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest is Cabernet Franc. Very attractive now in a youthful and vibrant way but this will be better in three to four years. Try it after 2027." James Suckling

"The frost damaged the earlier developing Cabernet Franc at the end of March, resulting in lower production but excellent quality fruit. The spring was mild and the summer generally warm, but a rapid acceleration of ripening in late summer forced the team to start harvesting in the first week of September to avoid over-ripening. This traditional blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc features an intense and balsamic flavour that brings out the character of blackcurrants, dust, leaves and cedar. It is balanced and light on its feet, with super-fresh acidity and a fine-grained, almost imperceptible tannin structure. Ripe and tangy raspberry and blueberry fruit linger on the mid palate, leading to a long, fresh finish with notes of cream and chocolate. This wine will reward ageing into the 2050s, but it will also provide much pleasure in its youth. "Sassicaia really was our house wine back then," says Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta, daughter of the president of San Guido, Marquis Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta. "It was more of a wine experiment that was only tested within the family and among friends, until we went on the market for the first time with the 1968 vintage. Today, this wine is all about elegance and balance. We like this style, which is not so much about the body. Sassicaia is a good representative of what we want to convey as a style."

Enough of the elegant understatement: Sassicaia 2021 is stunning and beguiling. Very elegant on the nose, it displays energy and character of a decidedly noble and fascinatingly spicy nature. Notes of wild violets mingle with original myrtle, juniper berries and coriander. The core of the wine is rich with nuances of black plums, dark tea leaves and cloves. Full-bodied, soft and enveloping on the palate, it displays perfectly ripe, noble tannins and a truly exciting finish that ignites from mid-palate and draws a progressive, ascending parabola as it progresses. Very dense on the palate, but also tightly meshed, you can feel the maturity of the vintage, but the wine remains tightly meshed and elegant throughout, almost virtuoso with delicate hints, the almost perfect tannin is grippy and silky. "Here it is: a quintessential Sassicaia that represents the excellence of the vintage while respecting the unique flavour profile of this outstanding Tuscan blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc. The Tenuta San Guido 2021 Bolgheri Sassicaia offers impeccable balance, excellent freshness and absolutely no signs of over-ripeness. The fruit balance is ideal, with a hint of crispness and lingering tension from the flesh and skin. The tannins are skilfully handled, with a firm grip and enough velvety texture to give volume and length. The bouquet is not green, instead offering mulled wine herbs and spices such as cinnamon and cloves delicately layered between the mostly red and some purple berry fruit. Redcurrant, blueberry, sweet pomegranate and Rainier cherry are strongly represented in this vintage. Over time, a fragrant hint of heritage rose unfolds. The oak tones are centred on gingerbread, hazelnut, cigar, sandalwood and something like grilled red pepper. On the palate, it offers a nice weight without heavy glycerin and an acidity flush that supports the wine's natural energy, brightness and viscosity.
