“Sapaio” Rosso Toscana IGT 2018 (BIO)
Massimo Piccin lives the dream of giving new expression to Bordeaux grapes from Bolgheri and producing wines that combine power, elegance and longevity. And so the Sapaio magnificently offers its full, vital and tannin-rich style and takes a lot of time for the finish. Once again, part of the grapes come from Bibbona, i.e. outside the Bolgheri DOC, so that this great wine is only allowed to bear the label Toscana IGT. Truly no reason to mope ...
Beautiful, animating bouquet of blackcurrants, blueberries, lavender and a delicate hint of chocolate. Firm, full-bodied, multi-layered on the palate with an attractive extract sweetness, finely woven but definitely present tannin and a resting, seamless substance that leaves nothing to be desired until the long and tasty finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Polished aromas of blueberries, mulberries, baking spice, sandalwood and rosemary. It’s full-bodied with tight, chewy tannins. Structured and layered with a fleshy texture. Try from 2023." James Suckling
"The 2018 Sapaio is distinguished by a lovely dark garnet-toned appearance that is deep and thickly concentrated but not without its shimmer and shine. Massimo Piccin shows a deft hand in a vintage that was not easy along the Tuscan coast. This wine is especially bright and focused in terms of its aromas, with black fruit, plum and ripe blackberry. Hints of spice and pipe tobacco add vertical lift and softness. The finish is leaner than we've seen in the past, but that 2018 austerity suits this wine well." Wine Advocate

“Sapaio” Rosso Toscana IGT 2020 (BIO)
Massimo Piccin is living the dream of giving new expression to Bordeaux growths from Bolgheri and producing wines that combine power, elegance and longevity. And so the Sapaio offers its full, vital and tannin-rich style magnificently and allows plenty of time for the finish. Once again, some of the grapes come from Bibbona, i.e. outside the Bolgheri DOC, so that this great wine can only bear the addition Toscana IGT.
Wonderful, animating bouquet of blackcurrants, blueberries, lavender and a delicate hint of chocolate. Firm on the palate, full-bodied, multi-layered with an attractive sweetness of extract, finely woven but very present tannins and a resting, seamless substance that leaves nothing to be desired right through to the long and flavoursome finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red with a delicately brightening rim. Finely characterised nose with notes of blackberries and cassis, some cedar wood, fine spice. Shows a lot of present fruit on the palate, cassis and blackberry, opens up with dense tannins, firm pressure." Falstaff
"Reductive and restrained on the nose, with green pepper, violets and cassis infused with spice, it leads to a full, dense, extracted and fierce palate with almost dusty tannins. The wine is savoury, but above all very fresh, pithy and dynamic. The finish is still a little austere and needs more bottle ageing, but it deserves attention in the long term." Decanter
"Impressive depth with lots of dark cherries, black pepper, cocoa powder, roasted red pepper and grilled herbs on the nose. Full-bodied and intense on the palate with lots of silty tannins that meld with the dark fruits and fine spices. Long-lasting and very fine-grained. This wine should drink well over the next ten years." James Suckling
"The Podere Sapaio 2020 Sapaio needs a few moments in the glass before the wine starts to sing. You get a full bouquet that includes ripe fruit, balanced spices, sweet cinnamon, cloves and an earthy note of minerals or gravel. The fruit generously coats the palate with depth, firm structure, integrated tannins and further layers of dark fruit that unfold over time." Wine Advocate
"Rich, supple and expressive, offering black cherry, blackberry, violet, mineral and spice aromas and flavors. This red builds on the palate to the saturated finish, with lively acidity and civilized tannins. Shows fine balance and length, though this is still a bit compact in the end." Wine Spectator

Podere Sapaio occupies a prominent position among the approximately 50 wineries in the Bolgheri region. The young, 40 hectare, picturesquely situated winery, founded by Massimo Piccin just before the turn of the millennium, stretches over the municipalities of Bibbona and Castagneto Carducci. Together with his qualified staff and under the oenological advice of Carlo Ferrini, the owner quickly succeeded in becoming a stylistic model for the wines of this region thanks to his interpretive skills. The winery caused a worldwide sensation when it was able to outdo well-known winegrowers such as Ornellaia at a blind tasting with its inexpensive second wine Volpolo.
The Podere Sapaio vineyard portfolio includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, three typical varieties from the Bordelais, which have contributed significantly to the reputation of Bolgheri wines. It also contains other types of grapes in small quantities. The fruit is harvested as gently as possible in the plots and then processed very conscientiously in the cellar. The cultivated areas are on quaternary deposits and range from soils of loose coarse-grained sand deposits to alluvial soils with calcareous subsoils that allow the water to drain off well. In addition to the vineyards, there are several hectares of olive groves where Frantoio, Moraiolo and Leccino trees grow.
The assortment of the house contains only two wines produced in a modern style. The drops are elegant, long-lasting and expressive and have gained in depth and character over the years. They skilfully combine the finesse of Bordeaux with the typical West Tuscan terroir. Piccin gave his two cuvées the names Sapaio and Volpolo. The flagship of the area, the Sapaio, is very often accompanied by the wine guideGambero Rosso. "Three glasses" crowned. The landowner chose both names, by the way, in accordance with the old Tuscan grape varieties Sapaia and Volpola, in order to emphasize the domestic origin of his products. The wines of the small bottle battery show much ripe fruit and are matured at least 14 months in barriques. The crown that characterises the overall appearance of Podere Sapaio is a tribute to the nobility of the wine and the high quality of the area. The symbol is also a tribute to the meticulous work carried out in the vineyards and winery. SUPERIORE.DE
"Like many others who invested in viticulture, Massino Piccin has changed his life fundamentally and dedicates himself full-time to his Podere Sapaio. It all began in 1999, in a beautiful forty-hectare estate, 25 of which were planted with typical local varieties. The soils of the vineyards are sandy and calcareous, stylistically they follow the modern path, punctual and precise in their extract and in an ever more harmonious relationship with the wood used for ageing."Gambero Rosso 2015
