“Occhione” Bianco Toscana IGT 2023
Occhione is a racy, fresh cuvée made from 90% Vermentino and 10% Viognier. Bright light yellow in colour with greenish reflections. Fine notes of peach, mango and grapefruit on the nose, medium-bodied on the palate with floral, fruity notes and well-balanced acidity. Overall, a lively and elegant wine that not only goes perfectly with fine Mediterranean fish dishes, but also brings the typical Maremma maquis into the glass. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling straw yellow with silver-grey tendencies. Fresh nose of crisp apple, citrus fruit and warm grass. Full-bodied on the palate, with concentrated fruit at the core, animating acidity and a lovely persistent finish." Falstaff

Rich ruby red colour, with a delicate woody note on the nose resulting from the fact that around 45% of the wine is aged for a short time in barriques. Fresh aroma of cherries, dense, pithy flavour with good structure and length. The tannins are still strong, but by no means aggressive. A wine with a strong personality from Antinori's Tenuta di Biserno winery. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark ruby-coloured core with a delicate rim. Delicate bouquet of blackcurrant, ripe plum, some nutmeg and a hint of mocha. Silky on the palate, persistent and harmonious with concentrated fruit, freshness and tightly woven tannins." Falstaff

“Il Pino di Biserno” Toscana IGT 2021 · MAGNUM in OWC
Outstandingly clear and typical in its aroma of ripe fruit, notes of smoke, liquorice and tar. Always reveals new nuances of its personality on the palate. Elegant and refined in every respect. SUPERIORE.DE
"Cosy aroma of blueberries, chocolate and leather; polished in the mouth, tightly woven tannins, lively fresh acidity, long red berry final. Great fun." Vinum
"Rich, intense ruby red colour with a slightly brightening rim. Rich amarena cherries and ripe plums on the nose, then leather, chocolate and coffee grounds. Mouth-filling on the palate, with elegant tannins, harmonious, juicy and a long final." Falstaff
"The Cabernet-related flavours come through well with dark fruits, blackberries and exotic spices. The wine is full-bodied in texture and structure, although it has a little more richness on the mid-palate. This gives Il Pino a more approachable feel. It finishes with a bright note of sweet cherry." Wine Advocate
"Very bright and focused with al-dente berry character on the nose, as well as orange-peel and violet aromas, following through to a medium body with ultra-fine tannins that are polished and so long. Racy at the end. Some crunchiness. So delicious now." James Suckling

Unique Supertuscan made from Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. A ripe bouquet of dark fruit and excellently integrated, spicy oak notes, with a delicious hint of freshly ground coffee and cocoa. Powerful elegance, great finesse, polished tannins and admirable independence on the palate. SUPERIORE.DE
"Smells wild - herbal and beautifully floral on the nose with ripe blackberry flavours. Round and supple, full-bodied and structured with fleshy tannins that also have a cool, chalky mineral edge that adds some minerality and freshness to the palate that balances the ripe, sweet black and blue fruits. I like the lingering powdery element and this wine has a certain spiciness and sophistication - cool blue fruits, cola, vanilla, cedar and toast. I find it hard to categorise it as Tuscan, as it smells and tastes more like an old-school Bordeaux or a Californian wine. Massive, heavy, with lots of oak and extraction." Decanter
"The nose captures the wistfulness of one last warm autumn day, with aromas of vanilla and berries floating above an herbal, woody earthiness. On the palate, the berries and herbs swirl together into a mocha finish, but contoured tannins and notable acid balance the fruit." Wine Enthusiast
"Intriguing berry-chocolate bouquet, nuances of spices and macchia; the attack is very supple, the acidity perfectly integrated, in harmony with the powdery tannins, powerful and yet with a lot of finesse right up to the spicy-herbal berry finish. Excellent style." Vinum
"This is a rich and profound wine with round tones of black fruit, spice, smoked tobacco and tarry smoke. The Biserno is shapely and generous with a full-bodied attack accentuated by crushed stone and pencil shavings. This opulent, cellar-worthy wine offers plenty of intensity and texture." Wine Advocate
"The 2020 Biserno is one of the best wines I've ever tasted here. Rich yet vibrant, the 2020 presents a much more restrained style than used to be the norm. There's still plenty of intensity, but energy and vibrancy have replaced volume as signatures. Espresso, menthol, liquorice, cloves and leather are some of the many notes that unfold in this powerful, elegant Maremma red wine. The wonderful flavours of the franc open up the finish effortlessly." Vinous
"A majestic blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, a bouquet that opens with a slight buzz to then reveal itself in its fullness, blackcurrants, with undergrowth, capers from Pantelleria, orange peel, a drink with salty tannins and persistence, with a mentholated finish." Luca Gardini
"Very attractive nose with ripe blackcurrants, spiced chocolate, grilled thyme, hazelnuts and bacon. Also notes of tobacco and cedar. Full bodied, so refined and polished with layers of finely chiselled tannins evenly distributed across the wine and beautifully integrated. Flourishing fruit with savoury herbs, peppermint and violets. Very long and persistent with a steady, mineral impression on the finish." James Suckling
"Dark, bright ruby red colour. Very fragrant and expressive nose of cassis, blackberries, fine mint, a hint of precious wood and milk chocolate, with a rich blackcurrant finish. Full-bodied on the palate, with an enormous amount of sweet melting, polished, embedded in tightly woven tannins, a noble liquorice note, comes back juicy in the back, very long, elegant, powerful." “Biserno” Toscana IGT 2021
Unique Supertuscan made from Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Intense, deep and lively ruby red colour. On the nose, it surprises with its intensity and elegant complexity of flavours. Aromatic herbs and spices emerge from the ripe dark berries, with hints of roasted flavours and dry pastries, followed by delicate, subtle notes from the ageing in barriques. The fine, well-integrated flavour is full, enveloping, with velvety tannins and a freshness that invites you to drink it slowly. Balanced, harmonious, fine and expressive: this wine is capable of constantly evolving. SUPERIORE.DE
"The grapes for this Bordeaux blend come from the best plots on the 40-hectare estate. It is matured for 15 months in predominantly new barriques. Expressive bouquet with ripe red and dark berries, framed by ethereal and balsamic notes, eucalyptus and Mediterranean herbal spice. Juicy on the palate with a perfectly ripe character, deep spiciness and fine, ripe tannins, remains very finesse-rich and elegant until the spicy, intense final." Weinwisser
"Famous bouquet with notes of violets, forest fruits, black pepper; balanced texture, the tannins robust and well integrated, harmonious progression with a solid final on dark berries and Mediterranean scrub." Vinum
"Bright, elegant ruby red colour. On the nose, cassis, cold smoke, cranberries, undergrowth and subtle hints of white bread. Compact, polished, very precise on the palate, with cool cassis fruit and fine mint flavours as well as tightly woven tannins, plus enormous juiciness, high drinking flow, very well done." Falstaff
"This wine is fresh and well-defined with bracing acidity driving the blackcurrant, blackberry, herb and spice flavours. Smooth and harmonious, with a line of chalky tannins on the finish, while the herbal elements persist." Wine Spectator
"Dark nose, gently herbal and fragrant, with hints of ripe fruit such as sultanas, figs, plums and notes of jasmine and liquorice. Soft and supple, with life and energy. Round and intense, with sweet, ripe cherries and blackcurrants, this wine feels quite serious, structured and with definite muscle, but still with refinement in the tannic finesse and overall weight on the palate. Streamlined and focused, with a certain power that is still restrained at the moment, but noticeable nonetheless. Nice notes of graphite and cool blue fruit help offset the sweet ripeness that is evident, but this wine manages to straddle the line between the two." Decanter
"The fresh herbs such as basil and thyme are attractive, paired with blackcurrants and blackberries on the nose. Full-bodied with lots of fruit and velvety tannins, showing an opulent and super Tuscan intensity. It needs three to five years to develop." James Suckling

Limitation of 3 articles per customer“Lodovico” Toscana IGT 2008
After many years of identifying the best Merlot, Cabernet and Petit Verdot parcels within the boundaries of their Bolgheri estate with the support of the famous OenologistMichel Rolland, the Antinori family discovered in the early 2000s that in the midst of this microclimate and terroir there was an even more special small vineyard whose results once again surpassed those of the larger area. It was immediately clear to all involved that this unique character had to be vinified and highlighted separately - this was the birth of today's cult wine Lodovico.
The 2008 vintage, for all its complexity, is a youthful and at the same time dense wine that only gradually opens up in the glass to reveal a multitude of layers. The rich bouquet has fruity, floral and spicy notes, as well as wild berries, blackcurrants and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is highly refined textured with fine tannins, sweet fruit and excellent length. Lodovico 2008 is a balanced wine of elegance and refinement, with depth, power and longevity, and it is the archetype of the level that the Tenuta di Biserno terroir can produce. SUPERIORE.DE
"A juicy, rich wine with currant, powdered chocolate and hints of vanilla. Full body with chewy tannins and a powerful, rich, chewy finish." James Suckling
"Though rich, this red is elegant and harmonious, featuring flavors of black currant, cherry, cedar, graphite and spice. A supple and polished wine, with a beam of fruit persisting through the finish." Wine Spectator
"The 2008 Lodovico has developed beautifully. Today, the 2008 is complex, beguiling and wonderfully expressive. The tannins remain formidable though, and will require additional time in bottle to soften. A blast of dark red/black fruit, smoke and incense hits the palate on the explosive finish. The 2008 is just beginning to enter its tertiary phase. Hints of smoke, tobacco, savory herbs and licorice inform the deeply expressive finish. What a gorgeous wine this is." Vinous
"Layers of espresso, mocha, blackberry jam and spices take shape in the glass. The 2008 shows remarkable depth and polish all the way through to the finish. The Lodovico is another big, persistent wine endowed with tons of Maremma warmth and personality. These vines are just 6-7 years old. The potential for the future seems very, very bright." Wine Advocate
"It's a dark ruby colour, with generous aromas of plums, sweet red and black fruit, coal, mineral and smoke. It has a voluptuous weight in the mouth, and a velvety texture offset by dark chocolate, smoke and a faded herb note. This is super-harmonious and long with very fine, compact tannins." Decanter
"From the coastal Tuscan estate of Lodovico Antinori (brother of Piero), here comes a gorgeous blend of Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc, Merlot and a small percentage of Petit Verdot. Soft chocolate and black cherry opens the nose and segues to enormous richness and length. The wine is excellent but the jury is out on whether it becomes one of the great cult classics of Italy." “Lodovico” Toscana IGT 2013
Ripe, dark fruits on the nose. Highly complex on the palate, with a depth and tannin structure that impressively reflect the age of the vines, plus a freshness and acidity framework that flanks the berry potpourri in a balanced way and, together with the ultra-fine tannin, leads into a long, firm finish. A multi-layered red with a strong character and the necessary storm and stress for the winner's podium. SUPERIORE.DE
"This vintage offers a distinctive note of crushed granite and pencil shavings not found in the others. Compared to those, this vintage is almost salty in taste. All in all, I think the 2013 vintage is going through a slower evolution and we just have to give it time. The tannins are dry, but they serve as sufficient glue to bind the many moving parts of the wine together. It needs time to settle down and develop." Wine Advocate
"The 2013 Lodovico seems to point to a different style from the one first favoured by Lodovico Antinori at Tenuta di Biserno. The wine's translucent colour, distinct aromatics and medium-weight structure are a clear departure from the past. The 2013 is wonderfully airy, fragrant and expressive and has so much to offer. Blood orange, mint, sweet spices and raspberry jam lead into the silky, medium weight finish of this extremely elegant wine." Vinous
"This rich and fruity red wine has a beautiful character of currants, berries and chocolate. Full and velvety." James Suckling
"Overripe, lush and complex, this wine focuses on aromas and flavours of blackcurrant, blackberry, Tuscan scrub, iron, tobacco and spice. The tannins are muscular but not overbearing, and the lively acidity provides energy and concentration. Excellent length." Wine Spectator

After many years of identifying the best Merlot, Cabernet and Petit Verdot parcels within the boundaries of their Bolgheri estate with the support of the famous oenologist Michel Rolland, the Antinori family discovered in the early 2000s that in the midst of this microclimate and terroir there was an even more special small vineyard whose results once again surpassed those of the larger area. It was immediately clear to all involved that this unique character had to be vinified and highlighted separately - this was the birth of today's cult wine Lodovico.
As the vines age, Lodovico comes of age. With the 2012 vintage, it is not better now, but a little more nuanced than its predecessors. Ripe, dark fruits on the nose. Highly complex on the palate, with a depth and tannic structure that impressively reflect the age of the vines, plus a freshness and acidity framework that flanks the berry potpourri in a balanced way and, together with the ultra-fine tannin, leads into a long, firm finish. A multi-layered red with a strong character and the necessary storm and stress for the winner's podium. SUPERIORE.DE
"You'll find aromas of cassis, French oak, cedar and blue flower on this full-bodied red. Made with Cabernet Franc and a tiny amount of Petit Verdot, the polished structured palate delivers black currant, star anise, espresso and aromatic herb set against fine-grained tannins that leave a firm finish." Wine Enthusiast
"The colour is deeper than the 2013, with a rich, smoky nose of brooding blackcurrant notes. It's densely concentrated and very ripe, with fewer green herb notes. There's a sumptuous texture, and a velvety quality to the still-firm tannins. An assertive style with plenty of refinement too." Decanter
"The estate's 2012 Lodovico, mostly Cabernet Franc with a dollop of Petit Verdot, boasts striking nuance for such a big, powerful wine. Here the flavors are intense but also beautifully delineated throughout. Mocha, espresso, blackberry jam and sweet herbs add shades of nuance on the dramatic finish. The interplay of structure and raciness should become even more compelling over the next handful of years." Vinous
"The 2012 Lodovico is a breakout wine that marks the beginning of its own distinct identity. This is a complete, 360-degree expression that is also showing very nicely at this moment in its drinking window. I'd say it is on the cusp of its tasting apex. The vines were planted in 2003 and 2004, so they were still young when this wine was made. Still, the quality of fruit is articulate and intense with blackberry, cinnamon, wet earth and pressed rose petal." Wine Advocate
"So aromatic and enticing with such gorgeous perfumes of flower and berry. Full body, integrated tannins with fantastic fruit and balance. Long and illustrious." James Suckling

“Lodovico” Toscana IGT 2019
After many years of identifying the best Merlot, Cabernet and Petit Verdot parcels within the boundaries of their Bolgheri vineyard with the help of the famous OenologistMichel Rolland, the Antinori family discovered in the early 2000s that there was an even more special microclimate and terroir in the middle of this microclimate, the results of which surpassed those of the larger area. Everyone involved immediately realised that this unique character had to be vinified and emphasised separately - this was the birth of today's cult wine Lodovico.
Connoisseurs know and appreciate the Biserno, the winery's second flagship. The grape composition is roughly the same, only here the grapes come from the Bellaria vineyard. As every year, Lodovico crowns the results of the Tenuta di Biserno. SUPERIORE.DE
"Majestic bouquet with lots of ripe, black berry fruit, forest floor, liquorice and ethereal-balsamic notes, already appears very noble and aristocratic, a touch of truffle resonates. In the
mouth, it is deep and complex, yet incredibly polished and characterised by great harmony. Velvety, structure-giving tannins, the terroir aspects become increasingly apparent. An elegant Cabernet Franc of majestic quality." Weinwisser"The Tenuta di Biserno 2019 Lodovico is another legendary wine from the Tuscan coast. This superb blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot reveals dense layers of dark fruit, pressed blackberry, leather and spice.
The 2018 edition is a highly successful wine of exceptional expression and enormous depth - and a flavour profile that balances concentration and power with the careful precision of the varieties used in the blend. The result is sharp and focussed, allowing for the detailed mapping of blackberries and plums followed by spice, delicate toasty notes and some chocolate. The elegant tannins are sweet and carefully integrated into every fibre of the wine. If you have followed the development of Lodovico over the last decade, the current vintage and the age of the vines have found the rhythm to produce a world-class wine. Chapeau! SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark ruby red with violet edges. Very wide-ranging nose with lots of ripe, black berry fruit, already appears very noble and aristocratic, a touch of truffle chocolate resonates. The finest vanilla tones and cedar bear witness to the noble wood maturation, behind these noble aromas a mineral terroir note reminiscent of iron also emerges. In the mouth, this is enormously dense, yet incredibly polished and characterised by great harmony, very round and velvety, almost pleasing, but it simply needs time to reveal its true greatness and the existing terroir aspects even more. A majestic wine." Weinwisser
"Rich ruby with a fine violet-coloured shimmer. Compact, fleshy nose with notes of cardamom, a hint of cinnamon, lots of blackberry and cassis. Very polished on the palate, with plenty of fine tannins, blackberry and tobacco flavours and a green, spicy final that somewhat dampens the flow." Falstaff
"Beautiful aromas of redcurrant, sage and other fresh herbs merge into a full body with round, creamy tannins. Tantalising texture and lush fruit character. Very balanced and refined. It is already beautiful now, but will be even better from 2023." James Suckling
"The Tenuta di Biserno 2018 Lodovico shows a high level of focus and focus in this vintage, which was not always easy given some extra rain showers. This full-bodied Tuscan red wine is vertical and very intense, while maintaining a careful sense of balance and aromatic equilibrium. It shows great black intensity with plenty of fruit and layering. The wine walks the proverbial fine line between power and elegance." Wine Advocate
"Lodovico has been produced in Bibbona on the border with Bolgheri since 2007 and is a relatively young brand run by Lodovico Antinori. Annual production is less than 10,000 bottles and the exact blend is not disclosed. The wine is based on Cabernet Franc and is blended with small quantities of Merlot and Petit Verdot. It is fermented in stainless steel and aged for 16 months in barriques, although it is bottled at a significantly lower volume than an equivalent Bordeaux. The 2018 is not entirely representative (try the excellent and more concentrated 2016), but it describes the graceful, Margaux-like elegance of this super Tuscan quite well. Parma violets, cedar, eucalyptus, wild raspberries and coffee grounds outline its complexity. The silky tannins are combined with a refreshing acidity." Wine Spectator

Lodovico from the rather "plump" and very balanced year 2015 in Western Tuscany immediately inspires in the glass with its rich, deeply saturated colour and the bouquet of dark plums, cedar wood, white smoke and vanilla. Compact and clear on the palate, the multi-layered aromas of black berries only gradually reveal themselves, but at no point do they seem overloaded. On the contrary: the balanced, bright acidity and the perfectly woven tannin keep the vintage-related opulence well in check and ensure that the DNA of this famous exceptional red wine is not only preserved but especially accentuated. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red with a light garnet edge. Very incisive nose, of sour cherries, blackberries and plums, underpinned by fine spices. Dense and gripping on the palate, firm tannin built into lots of sweet melt, baroque richness, a firework of spice flavours." Falstaff
"The 2015 Lodovico is a wine of real character and personality. Espresso, mocha, blackberry, spice, leather, cedar and a host of Cabernet Franc-infused aromas and flavors race out of the glass. Deep and brooding in voice, the 2015 speaks with real authority. A hint of reduction is going to need time in bottle to dissipate." Vinous
"The spectacular 2015 Lodovico is shaping up to be wine of stratospheric intensity, depth and succulence. Lodovico is a six-hectare parcel found within the greater Bellaria vineyard (that makes the Biserno wine) at this important estate in Bibbona, Coastal Tuscany. The entire site is planted to Bordeaux grapes Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. This vintage delivers power and momentum that drives this wine smoothly over the palate. The bouquet is seamless with dark fruit tones that segue to spice, tar, smoke and cured leather." Wine Advocate
"This has a very deep and intense nose of dark plums, black pepper, charcuterie, vanilla, cedar, bark and dried nutmeg. Yet, there’s underlying freshness, thanks to hints of blueberries and fresh spices. Full-bodied and really plush, but framed in a fine coat of chewy tannins. Linear acidity throughout keeps it fresh and spicy." James Suckling

After many years of identifying the best Merlot, Cabernet and Petit Verdot parcels within the boundaries of their Bolgheri estate with the support of the famous oenologist Michel Rolland, the Antinori family discovered in the early 2000s that in the midst of this microclimate and terroir there was an even more special micro-vineyard whose results once again surpassed those of the larger area. Strong ruby with a black core. Intense and dense nose, opens with blackberry, mulberry and dark currant, tobacco and dark pepper in the background. Polished and velvety in attack and course, shows lots of juicy fruit, dark berries, fine-meshed, very polished tannin, radiates for a long time with a rich finish. Just 7,000 bottles were produced in 2017 from the single vineyard Vigna Lodovico of Tenuta di Biserno. Every year, the wine is a true icon of western Tuscany in terms of expression and complexity and is only allocated to a hand-picked number of importers each year. SUPERIORE.DE
"Powerful, sparkling ruby violet. Opens with notes of graphite and tobacco, lots of dark berries, especially blueberry and elderberry, some eucalyptus. Also shows a lot of tobacco on the palate, unfolds with grippy tannin, deep earthy components, some tomato paste, firm pressure on the final, but also drying, additional storage is certainly beneficial." Falstaff
"This has a polished nose of mulberries, cassis, cloves, cedar and lavender. It’s full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. Plush and creamy with a velvety texture. Layered, rich and intense, with lingering spice and chocolate on a long finish. Very focused. Polished." James Suckling
"This is the headline wine from Lodovico Antinori's Tenuta di Biserno. The hot vintage 2017 Lodovico shows a rich and deeply saturated color with elegant tones of dark fruit, spice, rum cake, dried plum, jerky, charred meat and cured tobacco. Like the Biserno, this special vineyard selection reveals slightly less depth and dimension in terms of mouthfeel. That more compact palate is a common feature of the 2017 vintage in which hard work and severe fruit selection was achieved in order to counter the jammy concentration of the berries. This remains a big wine, however, with the balanced and bright acidity that is a crucial indicator of the wine's undeniable quality and pedigree." Wine Advocate

“Biserno” Toscana IGT 2020 · 6 bottles in OWC
Full-bodied on the palate, with an enormous amount of sweet melting, polished, embedded in tightly woven tannins, a noble liquorice note, comes back juicy in the back, very long, elegant, powerful." Unique Supertuscan made from Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.
"Famous bouquet with notes of violets, forest fruits, black pepper; balanced texture, the tannins robust and well integrated, harmonious progression with a solid final on dark berries and Mediterranean macchia." Vinum
"Bright, elegant ruby red colour. Nose of cassis, cold smoke, cranberries, undergrowth, with subtle hints of white bread. Compact, polished, very precise on the palate, with cool cassis fruit and fine mint flavours as well as tightly woven tannins, enormous juiciness, high drinking flow, very well done." Falstaff

Lodovico Antinori is one of the founders of the meteoric rise of Bolgheri wines in the Maremma. Already in the 1980s he recognized the potential of this region on the hills along the coast of Tuscany at the Tyrrhenian Sea. His successes with Ornellaia and Masseto have become legends. In 1994 an employee showed him the land above Bolgheri towards Bibbona. "It's called "Bellaria" because there's a steady sea breeze up here. "It was like love at first sight," said Lodovico Antinori in an interview, "because we were looking for an extension to the Ornellaia vineyards.
Lodovico and his team quickly realized that the geological composition of the soils in Bellaria was different, hilly and stony, clayey and calcareous, with large pebbles. So not for Ornellaia, more suitable for another project. It still took a while, but when he sold Ornellaia in 2001, the time was ripe to start a project together with his brother Piero, who ran the family business, for the first time. Together with the landowner Umberto Mannoni they founded the Tenuta di Biserno. The first harvest took place in 2003, the "Insoglio del Cinghiale" was born. If you are Lodovico Antinori, you can also name your wine with irony, because that means "The wallow of the wild boars". And the many wild pigs are rather a problem for the winegrowers of the Maremma.
The vineyards were planted between 2001 and 2005. Mainly with Cabernet Franc, but also with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot: "The wine hills remind me of Saint Émilion and Pomerol", says Lodovico Antinori in conversation. That's why he called Michel Rolland, the star oenologist from Bordeaux, with whom he had been working for Ornellaia for many years, as a consultant again. In Bordeaux he also met Helena Lindberg, who had already worked as an oenologist in Australia, New Zealand and Bordeaux for renowned wineries, and convinced her to move to the Maremma. Another project helped to convince them, because Lodovico Antinori loves Sauvignon blanc. And his grows in New Zealand on Mount Nelson near Marlborough, which is why Helena Lindberg looks after two harvests a year. One in the Maremma and one in New Zealand. The estate in New Zealand is also known as Campo di Sasso, as is the Tenuta, from which the first Insoglio del Cinghiale wines originated. It lies seven kilometres west of the Tenuta di Biserno, near the town of Bibbona. The main variety in the Campo di Sasso vineyards is the Syrah, which gives the Insoglio its unique flavour.
The Tenuta di Biserno is a property in an incredibly beautiful location, in the Alta Maremma, on a hill on the road from Bolgheri to Bibbona. A great panorama - from the towers of Bolgheri over the Tyrrhenian Sea to Bibbona you can let your gaze wander. In the back lie the forests of the Caselli Nature Reserve. And in between perfectly cultivated vineyards.
The soil consists of the so-called Bolgheri conglomerate - a mixture of mineral-rich alluvial soil, shell limestone and pebbles that provide drainage. Rather atypical for Bolgheri are the high proportions of lime and clay. Given the terroir and the variety of soils, Lodovico planted exclusively Bordeaux grape varieties, mainly Cabernet Franc, followed by Merlot, some Cabernet Sauvignon and surprisingly much Petit Verdot. The soil is very varied in the different locations. Maritime sediments and clay on northwestern slopes provide ideal conditions for the Merlot, while the gravelly plots at higher altitudes with good drainage are perfect for the Cabernets Franc. In the midst of the Biserno hills lie 6 hectares of "spectacular terroir" from which the top wine "Lodovico" comes. This is said to be the best cru in the region.
Soil and microclimate are the basis. Another aspect of the terroir is the luminosity of the Tyrrhenian Sea, which acts as a mirror. Biserno benefits from its cool breezes and perfect sunshine in a west-east orientation with rows open to the sea. The vineyards were planted with 6,500 vines per hectare in cordon education. Between the rows, greened with grass to limit the natural growth of the young vines. The yields are limited to 1 kg per plant = approx. 1 bottle per plant!
The Tenuta di Biserno originally had a second vineyard: I Pianali. There was only one wine produced, the Coronato. Since this did not fit to the Biserno style, it was sold again in the meantime. SUPERIORE.DE
