Chianti Classico DOCG 2021
Maurizia di Napoli Rampolla and her brother Luca describe their strategy of natural viticulture in Panzano as "gentle farming". The very successful Chianti Classico with its clean fruit bouquet, precise flavour, firm tannins and beautiful texture and depth is a delightful wine that is unfortunately very limited in quantity each year. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Chianti Classico 2021 is an elegant, graceful wine. Crushed flowers, bright red fruits, tobacco, cinnamon and dried flowers take shape in a decidedly delicate, restrained wine from Rampolla. The 2021 is a model of elegance and finesse and is at its best today." Vinous
"Maraschino cherry, pomegranate, smoked meat, earth and rosemary flavors highlight this sleek red, which is defined by vivid acidity and solid tannins, with a dry, sinewy finish." Wine Spectator
"A dense, velvety and delicious Chianti Classico with aromas of sour cherries, wild berries and dried flowers on the nose. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Lots of texture, with a core of berries coming through. Aromatic finish." James Suckling

Trebianco is a golden yellow "natural/orange wine" made from Chardonnay, Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Trebbiano and matured in clay barrels. The initially reductive bouquet has hints of sweet tobacco, nutmeg, leather, honey, orange peel and spicy herbs. Fresh on the palate with vibrant acidity. Note: The wine is unsulphurised, unfiltered and fascinatingly special. An oxidative note and lees in the wine do not represent a lack of quality. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Castello dei Rampolla 2022 Trebianco di S. Lucia is a blend of Trebbiano, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Traminer made in amphorae. It pours from the bottle with hints of amber and copper and definitely brings on macerated tones with white wine tannins and some bitterness. You taste the grape skins along with dried apricot and orange marmalade." Wine Advocate

“Sangiovese di S. Lucia” Toscana IGT 2019
Bottled without added sulphites, this Sangiovese rarity is produced only in the best vintages and is aged for 16 months in cocciopesto, a vessel made from ground brick, fine stone, sand and natural fibre binder. This mixture can then be moulded into vessels that are waterproof but still allow for micro-oxygenation. The real peculiarity of Cocciopesto wine containers lies in the material itself, which is characterised by a high thermal inertia and a certain permeability that makes it ideal for all phases, from vinification to ageing.
Compact colour, fruity, slightly animal bouquet of strawberry, cherry, caramel and brown bread. Very juicy on the palate, with sufficient aeration a puristic and at the same time extraordinarily tasty pleasure. The production quantity is just 2,400 bottles. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby with a drop of violet. In the nose first nuances of rum pot, then after bitter chocolate and sour cherries. On the palate with fresh fruit and hearty, grippy tannin, spreads out decisively, then unfortunately a bit consuming in the finish." Falstaff
"The 2019 Sangiovese di Santa Lucia is Rampolla's red done in amphora, with no SO2. Bright, punchy and full of character, the Sangiovese is a wine of notable personality, I would prefer to drink it sooner rather than later, while the fruit remains vibrant. Sweet floral, spice and game notes, along with that touch of reduction wines in amphora show, add to its personality." Vinous
"Flaunting its purity and unmistakable primary intensity, the Castello dei Rampolla 2019 Sangiovese di S. Lucia gives us all a little lesson in Sangiovese. If you look at the textbooks, this mighty Tuscan grape is often said to be redolent of wild berries, soil, rusty nail and blue flower. Low and behold, those are precisely the aromas you get. This vintage hits the nail squarely on the head and delivers a classic portrait. Earthy aromas of red brick and clay play a leading role. Indeed, the wine is fermented on the skins in amphorae." Wine Advocate
"Fresh and delicious, this 100% Sangiovese has earthy aromas of sunbaked soil, truffle, leather and ripe plum. Made entirely in earthenware vessels of cocciopesto (a blend of stone, sand, marl and terra–cotta) and without added sulfites, the smooth, juicy palate doles out ripe black cherry, blackberry, baking spice and mineral alongside supple tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. It's made to be drunk young so enjoy soon." Wine Enthusiast

“Sangiovese di S. Lucia” Toscana IGT 2021

This mixture can then be moulded into containers that are watertight but still allow micro-oxygenation. "The 2021 Sangiovese di S. Lucia is a bold, racy wine. Ripe red cherry fruit, licorice, leather, rose petal and sweet spice are nicely amplified. The Sangiovese is done in amphora, so it has the combination of fruit purity and intensely savory aromatics that are common for wines done in this style, which is on the eccentric side." Vinous
"Orange blossom with fresh cherries and dried flowers with some dried flower stems, following through to a medium body with tangy fruit and hints of spices. No sulfites added." James Suckling
"Sporting a very punchy and vibrant personality, the Castello dei Rampolla 2021 Sangiovese di S. Lucia offers an authentic and nearly transparent expression of Sangiovese from one of the most beautiful corners on the planet. With cocciopesto amphorae aging, you taste the skins of the grapes with plum and blackcurrant. There is bitter almond and lovely iris or violet-like aromas over a delicate, mid-weight delivery." “Donna Liù" (anfora) Merlot Toscana IGT 2020
Since the 2018 vintage, a small amount of Merlot has been vinified separately at Rampolla, named after the mother Donna Liù. The unfiltered wine was matured for 12 months in terracotta amphorae and fermented to almost 0 g/l residual sugar. Very elegant, fresh nose of sour cherry, laurel and cassis. Fresh on the palate and without the sometimes exuberant opulence of some other Tuscan Merlots, with a precise cherry fruit and salty-minty component. A finely chiselled Merlot that is hard to beat in terms of freshness, clarity and personality. It bridges the gap wonderfully between the Chianti Classico and the two flagships of the house, Sammarco and d'Alceo. Needs a few more years in the bottle. SUPERIORE.DE
"Intense, sparkling ruby colour with a pronounced violet hue. Open and accessible nose of blackberries and fresh plums, delicate spicy notes in the background, some cigar box. Lots of juicy fruit on the palate, fine, delicate tannins, savoury." Falstaff
"Lots of crushed blackberries and blueberries with flowers follow through to a medium body with fine tannins and a bright, tangy finish. Needs a couple of years to open." James Suckling
"The 2020 Merlot Liu' bristles with extreme purity. Aging in 3/4 cement and 1/4 amphora helps preserve tremendous purity of fruit. Blueberry, spice, lavender, chocolate and licorice are all dialed up. Sweet floral and spice notes add brightness throughout." Vinous
"Vinified in cement and in amphorae made of cocciopesto, a mixture that includes ground up tiles, stone fragments and sand, this savory Merlot is simply delicious. Smooth and polished, it boasts juicy black cherry, blackberry, orange zest and star anise before a minty finish. Lithe tannins give a silky mouthfeel while fresh acidity keeps it bright." Wine Enthusiast
"Now in its third vintage, the Castello dei Rampolla 2020 Liù is a fine and impeccably detailed wine. You taste bright fruit, cherry and dusty limestone with incredible focus, as if these things were under a microscope. That dusty mineral note of pencil shaving or chalkboard is especially beautiful. The finish is lean, or mid-weight, and there are hints of dried mint and black olive on the close. The bouquet is beautifully nuanced and the mouthfeel is more compact." Wine Advocate

“Sammarco” Rosso Toscana IGT 2019
Sammarco, made predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon with unmistakable Tuscan roots, shines with a ripe fruit bouquet and aromas of green pepper, leather and a hint of herbal spice. The flavour is solid and the crisp tannins are perfectly integrated into the powerful structure. A grandiose pleasure that expands and intensifies into the long final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling ruby colour with violet shimmer, delicate lightening rim. Initially somewhat cloudy on the nose, clarifies with aeration, then develops fine notes of raspberry, dark currant, some cedar wood. Pithy, gripping tannins characterise the wine on the palate, still very young, but has a lot of potential, put it away for a few years!" Falstaff
"The 2019 Sammarco is a very pretty, elegant wine with gorgeous aromatic intensity from Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up the majority of the blend this year. Sweet pipe tobacco, cedar, mint, dried cherry, incense and crushed leaves give this young, nascent Sammarco a remarkable aromatic presence. With time in the glass, the striking inner flavour and sweetness come to the fore. In 2019, Sammarco is more finesse than power." Vinous
"Lush and fluid, this intense red offers black currant, blackberry, wild herb, graphite, loam and tobacco flavors. Fresh, balanced and long, with lively acidity, pointed tannins and a long finish of dark fruit." Wine Spectator
"Currants and black berries with citrus undertones and flowers. Medium body with velvety tannins and a freshness and brightness. Lots of energy." James Suckling
"The 2019 Sammarco is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese. It is more austere and even robust compared to the more powerful style that is appreciated in this portfolio. It is an earthy wine with a broader base of flavours ranging from black fruits, baked plums, spices, tobacco and crushed limestone. In this wine you can feel the natural concentration of the 2019 vintage and the wonderfully controlled tannins." Wine Advocate

Concentrated colour, wide, complex fragrance that changes from sweet berry aromas to delicately spicy clove and cinnamon nuances and finally to very fresh menthol accents. Almost creamy in its soft nature, the rich, voluptuous taste. Every year D'Alceo is a dazzlingly attractive wine, which with French elegance and international flair convincingly represents above all its Chianti terroir. SUPERIORE.DE
"Truffle, leather, crushed violet, mature blueberry and molten chocolate aromas meld together on this full-bodied red. A savory, earthy blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petit Verdot, the smooth palate offers mature blueberry, blackberry and clove aromas punctuated with hints of game. Velvety tannins provide polished support." Wine Enthusiast
"This is a big and self-assured red with lots of charcoal, vanilla, dried blackberries, barbecued meat and resin. Full-bodied and very chewy indeed with a ton of dark fruit and raw power. A delicate line of acidity pulls the brakes on. Drink in 2027!" James Suckling
"Featuring concentrated flavors of blackberry, black currant, earth and leafy underbrush, this red is wrapped in a shroud of stiff tannins that upsets the balance a little. Nevertheless, this will come into its own with decanting, a little aging in bottle or paired with grilled steak or lamb. Delivers excellent intensity, energy and length." Wine Spectator
"Dark, powerful and explosive, D'Alceo is one of the epic wines of 2015. Crème de cassis, plum, graphite, sage, lavender, and menthol rush out of the glass in a deep, beautifully resonant wine loaded with class. A wine with striking inner sweetness, depth and structure, the 2015 will thrill readers lucky enough to own it for a number of years to come. The 2015 was fermented in cement and then spent 14 months in oak. It is rich, sumptuous and simply irresistible." Vinous

“D’Alceo” Rosso Toscana IGT 2012
One of the top wines of the region, which has been undisputed for decades. With its French elegance and international flair, it convincingly represents above all its Chianti terroir. Concentrated colour, wide, complex scent that changes from sweet berry aromas to delicate spicy clove and cinnamon nuances and finally to very fresh menthol accents. Almost creamy in its soft nature, the full-bodied, excessive taste. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2012 d'Alceo is sweet, round and enveloping. Silky tannins give the 2012 much of its shape, while adding to the wine's appeal. Plum, black cherry, menthol, licorice and sweet spices wrap around the fleshy, succulent finish. Like the Sammarco, d'Alceo is a bit restrained in this vintage." Antonio Galloni
"Fragrant and enticing with flower petal, dried black tea and berry aromas. Full to medium body, chewy tannins and a fruity finish. Needs to come together still." James Suckling
"A focused, balanced style, evoking pure cherry, raspberry, mineral and floral aromas and flavors, this is elegant and fluid yet dense and well structured, ending with lively acidity and dusty tannins. The finish goes on and on." Wine Spectator

“D’Alceo” Rosso Toscana IGT 2018
Its multi-layered bouquet of spices, black olive, rosemary, plum and cherry opens slowly. On the palate, firm, compact and initially introverted, then mint, spices, dark red fruit, plus cassis and graphite. The taste experiences come to light in small slices; with this outstanding red wine, it is worth waiting as hardly anywhere else to be able to fully discover the depth and complexity of this Tuscan jewel. SUPERIORE.DE
"This juicy, almost silky red is marked by aromas and flavors of cherry, black currant, violet, Tuscan scrub and earth. Vibrant yet dense, with lightly chewy tannins lining the finish. Features fine balance and length overall." Wine Spectator
"Dark luminous, rich ruby violet. Inky, sealing wax nose, then a mix of undergrowth and black berries, iron, spice, opens on cherry juice and dried violets. Gripping on the palate with rich, layered tannin, stretches out on earthy tones, powerful, shows lots of power, very independent, has a long life ahead of it." Falstaff
"Lots of blackcurrant and blackberry aromas follow a full body with firm tannins and a chewy finish. Lots of black liquorice, anise and light asphalt. Pencil too. Taste after 2025." James Suckling
"The wine reveals a dark appearance with dried blackberries, rum cake, juicy blackberries and syrupy kirsch. There is a good amount of fruit weight to carry the wine across the palate, but the quality of the fruit is superb; and the finish is finely textured and silky despite the robust flavours. It is powerful, but at the same time weightless. That in itself is a small miracle. The fruit comes from a six-hectare vineyard with south and south-east exposure." Wine Advocate
"The D'Alceo 2018 is a wild, exotic wine. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot combine in a wine that is lush, complex and exceptionally beautiful. Deep blue/purple fruit, sage, mint, lavender and chocolate are just some of the many notes that unfold. The 2018 was fermented in cement and then aged for 12 months in a combination of 500L tonneaux and barriques. With time, it really blossoms." Vinous

The winery was instrumental in the Italian wine miracle of the 1980s. This is where a sparkling clean Chianti Classico, the Super Tuscan Sammarco and the top product d'Alceo. All three of the red wines, strictly limited each year, perfectly reflect the impressive quality consciousness of Castello dei Rampolla. The estate in Panzano has been owned by the di Napoli family for almost 300 years. Since the end of the eighties at the latest, it has been world-famous for uninterrupted top quality. The Chianti Classico, however, does not play the most important role in the production facility despite its high share of earnings.
The grandfather of the siblings Maurizia and Luca di Napoli laid the foundations for the many years of success. From the 1970s, Alceo concentrated exclusively on viticulture, although it was risky at that time to earn one's living with this task alone. But the wine connoisseurs quickly noticed the good wine's top quality and thus secured its existence. The legendary Tenuta has long been run by Alceo's grandchildren.
Between 1994 and 1998, the siblings Maurizia and Luca initiated a very important stage of development, when they successfully converted Castello dei Rampolla step by step to organic and near-natural cultivation. Since then, no pesticides have been used in the vineyard. In order to obtain dense and concentrated must, the vines, which are on average about 360 metres above sea level, carry fewer grapes. In order to give the berries a lot of strength, the two winegrowers accept lower crop yields.
Chianti is traditionally produced with Sangiovese and a very small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. It is not aged in barriques. It is a wine of great character and longevity, thanks to its excellent sites in a shell-shaped depression and the work of the famous Tuscan oenologist Giacomo Tachis (†). SUPERIORE.DE
