Brunello di Montalcino “Castelgiocondo” DOCG 2019
Our customers had to do without Frescobaldi's Castelgiocondo for several years, as we felt that it did not sufficiently reflect the elegance and finesse of the Montalcino region. After the winery made some stylistic changes in recent years, it has evolved from a rather opulent wine into a very authentic and cool interpretation of the appellation and we would therefore not like to withhold the very successful 2019 edition from you.
Opens beautifully in the glass with sour cherries, spiced oranges and dried flowers. Creamy textures on the drink, contrasted by cool minerality and juicy acids, nicely accompanied by small red berries under a hint of sweet herbs and inner flowers. Castelgiocondo 2019 still needs some time to develop, but it has the necessary balance and structure to mature into a real beauty. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, light ruby with a granite-red rim. Deep and spicy nose of black pepper, damp earth, tobacco, cedar wood and cherry jam. Ripe fruit on the palate, finely woven tannins, lots of tension, a hint of menthol on the long finish." Falstaff
"Very dark ruby red with bright orange-coloured reflections. Rich, brooding cherry with a hint of eucalyptus. Supple fruit that is still quite curled up at the same time. Grainy, long tannins and plenty of juice on the finish." Jancis Robinson
"The Brunello comes from plots located between 350 and 450 metres above sea level on the predominantly slate-rich Galestro. Concentrated and expressive, the nose reveals an intriguing blend of red cherries, plums, nutmeg and mint. The layers of generous fruit are lush and the tannins have a suede-like texture. Undertones of sweet earth and forest permeate the wine. Well made, everything is effortlessly in place." Decanter
"The Frescobaldi 2019 Brunello di Montalcino CastelGiocondo shows notes of oak, dried spices, redwood and smoked tobacco. At its core, the wine shows dark fruit and a high level of extraction. The tannins are soft and dissolved, making this Brunello a wine that can be drunk immediately. The wine is exactly where you want it to be." Wine Advocate
"This powerful red wine is as spicy as it is fruity, with notes of cherry, plum, leather, wild thyme, woody undergrowth, iron and tobacco. Powerful, with dusty tannins that guard the long-lasting finish." Wine Spectator
"Black cherries, black bark, blackberries and lavender. Medium to full-bodied with juicy and polished tannins and a long, flavourful finish. Needs four to five years to open up and develop." James Suckling
"South-west quadrant of the appellation, a Brunello of spicy and balsamic elegance. Refined nose, black cherry, a hint of juniper, closing on cinnamon sensations. Dense and drinkable on the palate, with iodised tannins and recurring notes of black cherry, with citrus notes." Luca Gardini

For seven centuries, the name Marchesi de' Frescobaldi has been synonymous with a passionate and constant commitment to viticulture and winemaking, cleverly combining tradition and modernity. The wines of the Florentine noble family were already being drunk at European courts during the Renaissance - for example in the English royal house of Henry VIII or at the court of the Pope.
A family empire of impressive size.
With well over 1,200 hectares of vineyards and ten wineries, Frescobaldi is one of the largest winery owners in Europe. Fine wines of the highest quality are produced in various wineries - with a clear regional focus on Tuscany. Fancy an excerpt from the prominent list of wineries? The Tenuta Castiglioni is located near Montespertoli, where the winegrowing history of the Frescobaldi family began 700 years ago.
In 1995, Vittorio Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi joined forces to found a joint winery in Montalcino, Tuscany. Tenuta Luce began with ambitious goals, as the aim was to produce exceptional wines. The winery is now world-famous for its cult wines "Luce" and "Lux Vitis", among others. Since 2005, Tenuta Luce has once again been entirely in family hands: Lamberto Frescobaldi, Vittorio's son, runs the winery.
The Tenuta Castelgiocondo winery in the DOCG Montalcino is the place where Brunello "saw the light of day". Since 2005, the family has been the sole owner of the world-famous Tenuta dell'Ornellaia in Bolgheri and, for some time now, the historic Attems wine estate in Friuli has also belonged to Frescobaldi.
Tenuta Castelgiocondo - majestic & steeped in history.
The venerable Castelgiocondo vineyard is located south-west of Montalcino at an altitude of around 300 metres, which means ideal soil and climate conditions for the star of the region, the Sangiovese. The eponymous Castelgiocondo castle has been perched above the vineyard since the 11th century. The famous Brunello di Montalcino Castelgiocondo has been produced in this vineyard since the 19th century. Frescobaldi has selected sites here: embedded in the picturesque hilly landscape, the Sangiovese plots are open on all sides and are therefore optimally ventilated.
Tradition meets innovation.
The basis of the company's philosophy is a combination of terroir and a pronounced spirit of innovation. For example, Frescobaldi was the first to plant Chardonnay, Cabernet, Merlot and Pinot Noir in Tuscany and was committed to the valorisation of the Sangiovese grape. Vittorio Frescobaldi is the 31st generation to run the family winery, supported by his two brothers Ferdinando and Leonardo. Each Frescobaldi family winery retains its own personality, but what unites them all is the pursuit of quality and the desire to be among the best. Because one thing is certain: respect for tradition and the constant search for new challenges will continue to be part of the Frescobaldi family's innate character traits for generations to come.
