When he decided to found a winery, Luano Niccolai was a successful entrepreneur of rural origin. From this farm came Tenute Niccolai, spread over three production areas: Montalcino, San Gimignano and Motecucco. The heart of the small kingdom is and remains the Palagetto winery, a winery that was built in the early days in the middle of the impressive hilly landscape of San Gimignano. Although the property is located in the Chianti region, it is not possible to reach it without the "Chianti Colli Senesi" and the "Chianti Colli Senesi Riserva" only two plants pressed with this label.
Today, Luano's daughter Sabrina and her husband Mario take care of the rural property parallel to the agriturismo business they have set up. They not only produce excellent wines, but have also set up an olive mill on the estate, where they process the fruits of their own groves into virgin olive oil. While Sabrina does the business, Mario takes care of the vineyard and the modern winery. He is advised by Gianfrancesco Paoletti and sometimes also by his former teacher Giacomo Tachis on oenological questions.
The vineyards used by Tenute Niccolai cover a total area of more than 100 hectares. The Palagetto estate alone accounts for 44 hectares. At altitudes between 280 and 320 metres above sea level, the core farms of Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Sangiovese, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Vermentino are cultivated. Numerous products from the Tenuta Palagetto range - including Vernaccia di San Gimignano, for example - regularly receive high ratings from wine critics. SUPERIORE.DE
"While other farms have been expanding their vineyards and increasing output for a few years now, everything here remains within the tried and tested moderate framework - and quality continues to be the focus of interest."Gambero Rosso
