"A selection from the San Marcellino vineyard, which includes a plot of 50-year-old vines. The soil here is extremely stony and consists mainly of Alberese - a hard marl rich in calcium carbonate that tends to produce deeply coloured wines. This wine has a lot going for it. Tantalising red and blackcurrants are underpinned by toasty aromas and spice. The palate is rich and mouth-filling without being heavy, with velvety structured tannins. "The Chianti Classico Vigneto San Marcellino 2015 is fabulous. Sweet red cherry, red plum, mint, sweet pipe tobacco, cedar, liquorice, blood orange and dried herbs race from the glass. Sangiovese is so expressive. Yet the 2015 is a wine of restraint. I would cellar it for at least a couple of years, as it has clearly closed up after bottling.
