“La Massa” Rosso Toscana IGT 2020
Sparkling, rich ruby colour. Intense aroma of raspberries and cassis, herbal and spicy notes. Smooth, dense, fresh and juicy berry fruit on the palate. Long, voluminous and elegant - and this little masterpiece is a clear buy, and not just because of the price! SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red with a delicately brightening rim. Fine resinous tones on the nose, followed by juicy cherries, ripe raspberries, a hint of elderberries, delicate black bread crust, dried herbs and fine cold stone. Very juicy on the palate, full-bodied, with tight, youthful tannins and a juicy, salty final." Falstaff
"Blue and black fruits are enveloped by fine, chocolaty tannins with a hint of bitterness - possibly from bottle shock. Juicy and dense, with violet nuances and good acidity that continue into a long finish with blackberry and salinity. Good concentration and elegance at the same time." Decanter
"Ripe berries, citrus, preserved plums and some savoury baking spices lengthen to a medium-bodied palate with fine, juicy tannins and a tight, concentrated finish." James Suckling
"This red wine begins with bright black cherry and raspberry fruits, which take on notes of tobacco, eucalyptus, iron and leaves. Dense tannins emerge on the long-lasting finish." Wine Spectator
"The La Massa 2020 is a real powerhouse. An onslaught of black cherries, plums, liquorice, incense, chocolate and dried herbs stain the palate. This extravagant, dense wine is packed to the marrow. Give it a few years to mature." Vinous
"The Tenuta La Massa 2020 La Massa offers great value across the board. This is a generous and multi-layered blend. Winemaker Giampaolo Motta breaks the rules by producing Bordeaux-inspired wines in one of the most Sangiovese-orientated areas of Tuscany. But he still adds a little charm and magic to this wine." Wine Advocate
"The nose is a tart mix of dried cherries, cranberries, brick, earth and hibiscus, with a mix of fresh wild herbs providing some warmth. The sanguine fruitiness and earthy notes continue on the palate, but polished tannins and supple acidity provide a round texture." Wine Enthusiast

“Carla 6” Sangiovese di Toscana IGT 2018
Full of character and profound, the Sangiovese shows its feminine side with sweet and soft contours of cherry and blackberry. Enormously complex and perfectly balanced in flavour, velvety, fruity and with precisely proportioned tannins, infinitely long. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling ruby colour with a slight garnet sheen. Very intense and inviting nose, full of ripe wild raspberries and dark cherries, slightly smoky-mineral components in the background. Very dense on the palate, dark berry fruit, then unfortunately shows quite rough and coarse tannins in the back, earthy notes in the final." Falstaff
"The Carla 6 2018, the estate's best Sangiovese, is superb. Like all La Massa wines, it is deep, fleshy and very expressive. Juicy dark cherry, cedar wood, tobacco and spices can be found in this beautifully structured wine. The Carla 6 skilfully combines power with transparency." Vinous
"The Carla 6 2018 from Fattoria La Massa is 100% Sangiovese and comes from a 1.5-hectare vineyard planted in 1999 on slate and clay soils. This vintage shows a fleshy side with more fruit weight and concentration. The wine feels broad and rich on the palate, finishing with dark fruits, tobacco, crushed stone and even a hint of capers or green olives." Wine Advocate
"This red offers fruity, floral flavors signaled by aromas of ripe raspberry, cassis and violet, with earth, lavender and wild herb details. Elegant and silky, with firm tannins lurking beneath." Wine Spectator
"A very fine, pure Sangiovese from Super Tuscany with notes of gravel, blueberries, blackberries and black cherries. This wine has a real terroir character with balanced, intense and fine tannins and a long finish." James Suckling

“Carla 6” Sangiovese di Toscana IGT 2019
At first glance, one would not guess that this is a Sangiovese. The Carla 6 radiates pure intensity, darkness and richness. From the fruity aromas of cherry and cassis to the floral and earthy notes of rosebuds and damp earth, this wine has it all, plus a tertiary note of natural rubber. This is pure beauty in a dark and deep wine. Carla 6 is a real hit. SUPERIORE.DE
"An adventurous nose brings lucky penny, brick wall and then grass and earth where the wind carries notes of hibiscus, cherry and cranberry. The earthy and astringent fruit elements continue on the palate, over a sweeter undercurrent. Both breadth and depth are evident." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2019 Carla 6, 100% Sangiovese, is a powerful, deep wine. Juicy dark cherry, plum, incense, chocolate, spice, leather and liquorice are all present. This is a particularly dense, concentrated Sangiovese based on textural richness more than anything else." Vinous
"Varietal Sangiovese of the highest class from Panzano from the vineyard with the number 6, opens with inviting notes of black cherries and liquorice, also tobacco; the tannin framework with a lot of structure and yet also great finesse, the mineral vein sets the tone until the invigorating final." Vinum
"Bright, radiant ruby red. In the nose initially noble spice tones, of cloves, pepper, as well as ripe forest fruits, in addition fine balsamic hints, appears very compact. Extremely polished on the palate, with a powerful, elegant course, juicy, slightly salty undertone, shows a beautiful feel and long finish, with pressure in the finish." Falstaff
"The 2019 Carla 6 is a pure Sangiovese from one of Tuscany's most talented winemakers. This medium to full-bodied expression is velvety in texture with wild fruits, dusty minerals and hints of iron ore." Wine Advocate
"Subtle and complex aromas of cherries and berries with hints of orange blossom and terracotta. Medium to full-bodied with very fine tannins and a long, lingering finish. Structure with finesse." James Suckling

“Giorgio Primo” Rosso Toscana IGT 2019
Rich, concentrated Bordeaux-style red with the unmistakable signature of top oenological consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt. Multi-layered black fruit on the nose, plus rock, liquorice, camphor and graphite. Impressively supple on the palate, the fruit is always juicy and centred, wonderful and almost perfect in structure, polish, elegance and length. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, noble ruby red colour. Compact nose of rich cherries, black truffle, some pepper, then again plenty of rich berry fruit in the aftertaste, blackberry and cassis. Densely woven on the palate, with a beautiful melting texture and powerful tannins, opens up in many layers, with sparse stony components, radiant and powerful, lingers for a long time, magnificent." Falstaff
"The fresh, inviting nose is like carpaccio with a caprese-inspired garnish of cherry tomatoes, basil and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. The palate continues blending sanguine and umami notes above a latent sweetness, creating a wine that deliciously coats the mouth and then lingers there." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2019 Giorgio Primo is a worth follow up to the stellar 2018. Dense, rich and explosive, the 2019 races across the palate with dark fruit, chocolate, leather, incense and spice. This sumptuous Cabernet Sauvignon-based Panzano red has a ton to offer. The oak is a bit prominent; otherwise, the 2019 is nicely done." Vinous
"Extremely complex aromas of crushed currants, spices and sandalwood with some bark. Violets, too! Full-bodied with creamy, polished tannins and great intensity. Layered and beautiful. Better in 2024, but already beautiful to try." James Suckling
"Vintner Giampaolo Motta's inspiration is the great wines of Bordeaux, and his vision has never changed despite many passing trends. But perhaps his most important choice as a winemaker (born outside of Tuscany) is his firm commitment to Panzano in Chianti as the ideal home for the French grapes he cultivates. This is an etched and polished wine with dark fruit, spice, graphite and pencil shavings. The tannins are beautifully managed, and the wine is long and complex." Wine Advocate

“La Massa” Rosso Toscana IGT 2019 · Double MAGNUM in OWC
Sparkling, rich ruby. Intense scent of raspberries and cassis, herbal spicy notes. Smooth, dense, fresh and juicy berry fruit on the palate. Long, voluminous and elegant - and not only because of the price a clear buy! SUPERIORE.DE
"Intense ruby red with dark nuances. Slightly earthy on the nose at first, then opens up to dark cherry and rose petals. Fresh on the palate, youthful, broad-mudded tannin, with good fruit notes, into the medium-long finish." Falstaff
"This has aromas of sour cherries, currants, lemon leaves and olive stones. It’s juicy and bright with a medium body and fine tannins. Savory, focused and tight finish." James Suckling
"The 2019 La Massa is a very pretty wine. Crushed flowers, red berry fruit, mint, chalk and spice accents are all nicely delineated. There's terrific energy driving the 2019. Once again, Giampaolo Motta's Sangiovese-based blend delivers the goods." Vinous
"The wine sees mostly stainless steel, although 20% of the total finishes in barrique. Because the Sangiovese grape does not produce very dense wines, La Massa gets its dark appearance from the other grapes, especially the Alicante Bouschet. It follows that those carefully selected blending elements also contribute to the wine's juicy concentration and black fruit flavors. However, the pretty minerality you sense here and the balanced freshness certainly come from the Sangiovese. This vintage yields tight and linear results. This is a little masterpiece at an affordable price." Wine Advocate

"La Massa has been one of the best producers of Chianti Classico since the 1990s. Its mature, viscous colour appears older than 2019. Rich and concentrated, the Giorgio Primo brings out the classic Tuscan sweetness in the nose, is very spicy and full, with slightly matured accents here too. Very appealing and with a lot of Cabernet character, it appears sweeter than other Tuscan Bordeaux blends, for example from Bolgheri. Very smooth and round, meltingly sweet, yet with a slightly strict, consistent acidity. Beautiful, powerful appearance, not designed for decades of development, but rather immediately accessible, clearly structured and with a sweet, generous finish." Weinwisser
"Rich, deep dark ruby colour with a slight violet tinge. Very clear and intense nose, with rich notes of blackcurrants, black cherries and plums, with a hint of ginger in the background. The attack and finish are very polished, lots of fine-meshed tannins, builds up plenty of pressure, with a long, savoury aftertaste of tobacco." Falstaff
"Wonderful aromas of blackcurrants and blackberries with notes of crushed stones and walnuts. Full-bodied, firm and chewy tannins with blackberries and hints of chocolate and spices. Flavourful and intense on the finish. Better after 2023, but also very nice now." James Suckling
"The nose is reminiscent of a summer barbecue with clouds of smoky meat mingling with dark, luscious berries and fruit. On the palate, dessert arrives with a slice of berry pie, but peppery spiciness and burning tannins provide balance through a bitter, refined, lingering finish." Wine Enthusiast
"The Fattoria La Massa 2018 Giorgio Primo is a wine of richness, volume and texture. The blend consists of 55 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 40 % Merlot and 5 % Petit Verdot. The maceration time is 26 to 28 days and gives the wine the beautiful depth and creaminess that you can taste here. The bouquet is reminiscent of black fruits, crushed stones, truffles and roasted spices. The full-bodied structure of the wine and its freshness promise long ageing in the cellar." Wine Advocate
"The Giorgio Primo 2018 represents a new level of finesse at La Massa. Powerful and dense in the glass, with tremendous structure, the Giorgio Primo is a great example of how compelling international varieties are in the Conca d'Oro area of Panzano. Crème de cassis, spices, new leather, chocolate and sweet spices build up on the structured, intensely flavoured finish." Vinous

Giampaolo Motta is called a lateral thinker by many colleagues. In any case, he is always good for surprises. Born in Naples, he worked in renowned wineries in the Chianti Classico region. His favourite wines, however, were from Bordeaux. No wonder then that he soon found himself in famous chateaux. It was there that the idea was born that it must be possible to press red wines of the same quality in Tuscany.
In 1992 he was fortunate enough to purchase an old winery, the Tenuta La Massa, in the best location of Panzano in Chianti. "Conca d'Oro" - the golden bowl - is what the locals call this south-facing huge depression in the landscape, which looks like an oversized clam full of vines. The name, however, comes from the time when wheat was still cultivated here, which in the light of the afternoon sun made the natural amphitheatre glow golden. Today it is a lush green of the vines that have long dominated here. However, the Tenuta La Massa was already mentioned here with wine in documents in the 15th century.
For ten years Giampaolo Motta, with the help of the star oenologist Carlo Ferrini and Stéphane Derenoncourt from Bordeaux as advisors, experimented with the grape varieties laid down in the Consorzio Chianti Classico, with various clones and rootstock vines, Guyot and Cordon training and - finally, he surprisingly left the association. He did not want to be restricted anymore: "After ten years of work, I was not really happy with the result." Success soon proved him right, because his "Giorgo Primo", which originally featured varying proportions of the Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot or Alicante Bouschet, depending on the vintage, in addition to Sangiovese, climbed rapidly into the Olympus of Italian top wines and is now a pure Bordeaux cuvée with a main proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, which matures excellently in the Conca d'Oro. His "second wine" La Massa is a cuvée with Sangiovese as main variety and married with Bordeaux varieties. Named after his daughter Carla, this wine is a selection of the best Sangiovese grapes.
Giampaolo Motta never allowed himself to be subjected to the regulations of the BIO associations. Smiling, he explains "neither organic nor biodynamic - but logical and dynamic". "I live here and therefore have no interest in pesticides or systemic treatments" he adds.
When you enter his newly built cellar when the grapes are delivered, you see neither tanks nor barrels, but a chessboard floor made of black and white tiles. And on each side 6 stainless steel closures embedded in the floor. Nothing else. No hoses, no pumps. Everything here runs only by gravity from top to bottom. Because underneath these closures are the fermentation tanks, one floor below. Okay, this is different at harvest time. Because there are conveyor belts on the chessboard and lots of employees who sort the delivered grapes by hand, because only the best are allowed downstairs. Giampaolo Motta himself developed a uniquely gentle, sophisticated stirring system to push the mash down.
In Bordeaux, Motta had also met the architect Bernard Mazieres, who renovated Château Petrus, Mouton-Rothschild and Château Latour, among others - who probably paid much more than Giampaolo Motta, who simply invited and hosted the architect until he was overwhelmed by the charm of the landscape, as well as the charm, the attention to detail and the uncompromising nature of the host and began to plan. This too was probably rather surprising.
The most recent surprise came in November 2018, when Giampaolo Motta, by now successful and awarded worldwide, sold 40% each to the Tommasi wine group from Valpolicella and Ermen Minari, a manager of a French high rack logistics company, to enable further investments in vineyards, he announced. He will retain 20% and the management of the winery. The outstanding quality of La Massa's wines is therefore assured.
The Tommasi wine dynasty from Valpolicella has been buying or investing in vineyards across Italy for more than twenty years. In the Maremma at Poggio al Tufo, in Montalcino at Podere Casisano, in Basilicata at Azienda Paternoster, in Oltrepò Pavese at Tenuta Caseo and in Manduria at Masseria Surani. SUPERIORE.DE
"Giampaolo Motta's Fattoria La Massa is one of my favorite estates in Panzano-in-Chainti. This tasting served as a happy reminder of why I love these wines so much. The 2012 Giorgio Prima is impeccable. It is a small miracle in what most agree was not an easy vintage. Mr. Motta evidently has that magic touch. I loved this set of new releases and was particularly thrilled to try a new wine: The IGT Toscana Carla 6 that left me extremely satisfied. In truth, I was floored by it."Robert Parker
