Monica Raspi produces her Riserva from a single vineyard with the oldest vines of the winery, planted in 2000. The east-facing vineyard lies at an altitude of 350 metres and the soil is poor and stony with many limestone deposits. With its subtle bouquet, it slowly but surely seduces with aromas of raspberries, cherries and thyme flowers. The palate is wonderfully elegant, with a stony minerality and a tangy, appetising backbone. Terracotta-like tannins sneak up and envelop the fruit rather than undermine it. Pomona (meaning "the fertile one") was the name of the goddess of gardens and crops for the ancient Romans. She gave her name to the vineyard located in the heart of the Senes Chianti region. The land is located nine kilometres from Siena and eight kilometres from Castellina. The manor buildings, farmhouses, storehouses and cellars belonging to Villa Pomona have been preserved in their original structure to this day. The estate is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, forests and pastures. The owners' early declared goal of producing an original, traditional Chianti is still consistently pursued today.
The five hectares of hillside vineyard face south/southeast. The soil consists of calcareous marl. More than 90 percent of the vineyards are planted with Sangiovese, Colorino and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards, which are cultivated in an environmentally friendly manner, are five to 25 years old. When cultivating the vineyards, the estate owners pay particular attention to a balanced care of the soil and a harmonious development of the vines.
The history of Villa Pomona dates back to the second half of the 18th century. At that time, the estate was still called Fattoria Ricceri after the name of the owners at the time. The estate also included a brickyard. In 1899, the estate was acquired by Bandino Bandini, an ancestor of the owners. He successfully devoted himself to agriculture and also gave the farm its present name. Thanks to the brickyard, Pomona was subsequently able to expand considerably. Wine cellars and an oil mill were added, where olives from neighbouring estates were also ground. With the end of the half-lease, activities gradually declined. The estate fell into disrepair until Enzo Raspi, Bandino's grandson, had renovations carried out and renewed the cultivation of wine and olives. Today, Enzo's daughter Monica successfully continues the estate's work. The small agriturismo also reflects the naturalness and closeness to nature of the family. SUPERIORE.DE
