“Irisse” Vermentino Montecucco DOC 2022 (BIO)
Bright yellow organic Vermentino with a small proportion of Grechetto. The idea came from Maurizio Castelli, who also advises the Barberani winery in Umbria. Maurizio Castelli creates this marvellous white wine from the Tuscan coast from a traditional, local blend based on a historical model and always picks the grapes quite late. The nose has a bright aroma of apple, pear, flint and a certain exoticism. Complex and full on the palate, the rich flavour is accompanied by an invigorating, fresh acidity right through to the long final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Intense straw yellow colour. Pleasant aroma of ripe fruit, honey and wild herbs on the nose. Fine acidity on the palate, firm structure, great citrus notes and final lingering final." Falstaff
"This wine is waxy and citrusy with notes of dried lemons, savoury herbs and hints of tropical fruit and caramel. Juicy and racy with a medium body. Firm and a little phenolic, with crisp, energetic acidity." James Suckling

"The 2020 Montecucco Rosso Riserva lifts from the glass with a whiff of reduction that slowly blows off to reveal an herbal-tinged mix of wild strawberries, cedar and spice. This is rich and velvety, with masses of ripe red fruits and tactile mineral tones complicated by a note of sage. Brisk acidity maintains balance. It tapers off with a woody sensation, like a pine spice box, as hints of chalk dust and inner rose fade. The warmth of the vintage imparted a fleshy, nearly opulent character to the Rosso Riserva." Claudio Tipa, together with his wife Maria and his sister Maria Iris, has built up a small wine empire from several branches scattered all over Tuscany, starting with the purchase of the Castello ColleMassari winery. With the winery, which is located in the northern Maremma in the Montecucco DOC between Montalcino and the vineyards of Morellino di Scansano, about 320 meters above sea level, the family not only fulfilled a long-cherished dream, but the new owners also meant a noticeable upgrading of the growing zone, which is excellently suitable for the cultivation of Sangiovese.
Claudio Tipa, Sicilian by birth and president of the Consorzio Montecucco, has granted the Tuscan parade variety, which has emerged from selections in cooperation with the University of Pisa, a lion's share of about 80 percent among the red grapes in the vineyards. Vermentino has a similar importance among the white grape varieties. Until today ColleMassari has gained an excellent reputation also beyond the borders of the Maremma. So, it is no surprise that the wine guide Gambero Rosso has chosen the exemplary producer site as "wine estate of the year" in 2014.
After acquiring the estate, the passionate owners not only purchased additional land, but also undertook a complete restructuring of the business. The vineyards and the cellar were thoroughly modernized with considerable financial means. The estate is located in an area characterized by a particularly favorable microclimate with good ventilation and strong temperature fluctuations. The steep vineyards are cultivated according to the traditional methods of the cordon or double Guyot system. From the beginning, the winery has worked according to the principles of certified organic viticulture.
In the imposing cellar, the grapes and must are processed on four levels without pumps or other mechanical aids. The top cuvées are fermented in 1,000-liter conical wooden vats and only processed manually. All other wines complete the fermentation process in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Not least due to optimal conditions in the plots and in the cellar, the Tipa family's wines, which radiate a lot of personality, have continuously gained in quality. Most recently, the Riserve of the Montecucco Sangiovese Lombrone and the Montecucco Rosso ColleMassari were often among the most outstanding wines. Today, ColleMassari Spa includes, besides ColleMassari, the estates Grattamacco in the Bolgheri area and Poggio di Sotto in Montalcino. These also occupy top positions in their respective regions.
