“A Quo” Rosso Toscana IGT 2021
A Quo is the entry into the sensual world of Montepeloso. A fresh, daring wine from younger vineyards. Round and velvety, clean and fruity, this blend of five grape varieties combines the virtues of Montepeloso and Fabio Chiarelotto's high standards to the finest. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 A Quo is a fabulous introduction to these wines. Bright, punchy and vibrant, the 2021 offers up an exciting mix of red fruit, blood orange, rose petal, mint and cinnamon. Montepeloso's entry-level estate offering is a winner." Vinous
"The 2021 A Quo, made mainly from Sangiovese and smaller proportions of Malvasia Nera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Montepulciano, Marselan and Alicante Bouschet, offers intense scents ranging from blackberry to dark rose - like one of those deep purple flowers you see in a flower shop. It has a dense texture and a solid structure." Wine Advocate
"A firm and silky red wine with blackberry and blueberry character and a hint of cream. Medium-bodied with polished tannins and a fresh finish. Racy and refined on the finish." James Suckling

“Eneo” Rosso Toscana IGT 2020
Eneo is supposed to be the "Grand Vin" of Montepesolo, the Italian answer to the globalisation of wines. And Eneo can do that. The blend of indigenous grape varieties, with Sangiovese and Montepulciano clearly in the foreground, unmistakably expresses its terroir and is understood worldwide in the process. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich, sparkling ruby red with a dark core. Filigree in the nose with discreet notes of ripe cherry, blueberries and red roses. On the palate with fine fruit melt, creamy and with beautiful fruit, juicy, young but fine-grained tannin, slightly salty on the lingering finish." Falstaff
"Fresh raspberries and blackberries with smoke and asphalt. Medium-to full-bodied. Tight and focused. Creamy and very fine tannins. Give it two or three years to open but already delicious." James Suckling"The 2020 Eneo does not have the same fruit flesh and mass as the 2019 vintage, but it shows a lot of richness and intensity, especially on the bouquet. Perhaps the flavours in this wine are more focused and sharper, and there is a nice mineral note that forms a through line between the bouquet and the medium to full mouthfeel. This vintage feels more approachable than the 2019." Wine Advocate
"The 2020 Eneo is bright and effusive, with notable aromatic presence but perhaps a bit less textural intensity than most years. That will make it easy to drink with minimal cellaring. Red cherry fruit, blood orange, mint, cinnamon and a hint of cedar linger." Vinous

“Eneo” Rosso Costa Toscana IGT 2021
Eneo is supposed to be the "Grand Vin" of Montepesolo, the Italian answer to the globalisation of wines. And Eneo can do that. The blend of indigenous grape varieties, with Sangiovese and Montepulciano clearly in the foreground, unmistakably expresses its terroir and is understood worldwide in the process. SUPERIORE.DE
"Elegantly bright ruby red. Pronounced on the nose with aromas of juicy mulberries and blackberries, rose petals, underpinned by a hint of nutmeg. With soft but precise fruit on the palate, tense, tight tannin, long finish." Falstaff
"Lovely perfumes of flowers, fresh plums and red berries with some stones. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins that blend into the wine. Finely pixelated. Just a hint of bitterness at the end." James Suckling
"The 2021 Eneo is superb. Bright and effusive, with tons of explosive energy, the 2021 is shaping up to be a gem. Crushed flowers, blood orange, cinnamon, cedar and spice are all finely delineated in an Eneo that exudes balance. Clean mineral notes extend the finish effortlessly. I very much admire the vibrancy here, something that is hard to achieve in this district of Suvereto." Vinous

“Nardo” Rosso Toscana IGT 2011
Outstanding Nardo 2011: Dark and powerful, yet highly elegant aromas of wild cherries, spices, liquorice, cassis and leather with exceptional balance and purity. A radiant, cosmopolitan Italian. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2011 Nardo presents on the palate with super ripe dark cherries, smoke from rapeseed berries, tobacco, incense and new leather. Dark and lush, the 2011 has stunning textural depth and richness. harvestshould expect a full-bodied, resonant and immensely rich red wine. The Nardois is 50% Montepulciano, 45% Sangiovese and 5% Marsellan, a blend that works particularly well here." VINOUS
"The 2011 Nardo reveals unstoppable ambition. It maintains a level of positive momentum that is almost impossible to find outside that elite group that makes up the great icon wines of the world. Immediately likable and intriguing, Nardo is an ever-fluid and evolving expression that starts with dark fruit and segues to budding tertiary aromas of licorice and crushed mineral. This style is contemporary and approachable, but the wine's complexity is not to be underestimated. Every piece of this moving puzzle works to achieve unity." Wine Advocate
"Aromas of dark berries, walnuts and hot stones lead to a full body with a solid core of fruit and silky tannins. It is firm and very dense, but shows a very dense mid-palate." James Suckling

“Nardo” Rosso Toscana IGT 2020
The uncompromisingly selected grapes come from the oldest vineyards of the winery. Dark and powerful, yet highly elegant aromas of wild cherries, spices, liquorice, cassis and leather with exceptional balance and purity. A radiant, cosmopolitan Italian. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Nardo is a wild, powerful wine. Dark red fruit, menthol, licorice, spice, game, grilled herbs, earthiness and tobacco add to an impression of rusticity. The 2020 is quite the bruiser. " Vinous
"Powerful ruby with a slight violet shimmer. Presents itself in the nose with intense notes of plums, pickled cherries and some tobacco. Gripping, gripping tannin, lots of sweet fruit melt, still a little rough on the final." Falstaff
"This wine has a dark core of black fruits with grilled rosemary or curry leaves in the background. There are also elegant mineral tones reminiscent of pencil shavings or even a hint of rusty iron. The palate is dry and quite firm with fruit and oak tannins." Wine Advocate
"A wine with beautiful, crisp purple fruits, fresh raspberries and citrus fruits. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a crisp and lively finish. Lots of fruit on the finish. Needs a little time to open up but is already refreshing and delicious." James Suckling

"Bright, elegant ruby red. Fruity nose, red berry, freshly baked bread, some graphite, sealing wax, still very youthful. On the palate with a hearty attack and course, nobly embedded in the wood, punchy, clear, expressive, will age well, put away." Falstaff
"Delicate and perfumed with cherries and forest fruits as well as strawberries. A touch of coffee. Medium-bodied with crunchy fruit and fine tannins that give a silky texture and lovely length. Fruit with earth and spice. Some raw meat. Enticing now but will be even better in two or three years. Some whole berry and whole cluster fermentation with the sangiovese. Precise." James Suckling
"The 2021 Nardo is elegant, finessed and classy to the core. White pepper, chalk, mint, blood orange, dried flowers and cedar give the 2021 striking aromatic presence and energy. I don’t remember a Nardo with much translucent energy. Readers will want to cellar this for at least a few years." Vinous

“Gabbro” Rosso Toscana IGT 2020
Gabbro is the essence of Montepeloso's finest Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, the vines are over 40 years old. Impressively complex bouquet of dark fruits, smoke and grilled vegetables. Powerful and muscular on the palate, revealing its pedigree and great class. Exquisite, complex, nuanced, persistent, long ... Gabbro really does offer everything you need for an unforgettable wine experience at world-class Cabernet level. Only 2,500 bottles were produced. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich, deep dark ruby colour. Opens with fine notes of mint, some chocolate, fresh dark currant. Firm and gripping tannins on the palate, good tension, lots of pressure on the final." Falstaff
"The 2020 Gabbro is great. Montepeloso's bold Cabernet Sauvignon delivers tons of varietal character and savoury intensity with less opulence than most years. Dark fruit leather, liquorice, smoke, tobacco and incense lead into a sombre finish. The tannins are also powerful here." Vinous
"A rich and juicy red wine with plum and chocolate flavours. Also some fresh sage. It is full and complex, but remains bright and lively. A hint of herbs and dark fruit at the end, as well as earth." James Suckling
"The Gabbro 2020 (made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon) is ripe, rich and smooth. This wine pushes the boundaries in all directions (including a hefty 15% alcohol content). Black fruits and baked plums hide hints of dried herbs or rosemary, but the texture of the wine is what ultimately sets this hot vintage apart." Wine Advocate

Gabbro in a small edition of just 2,500 bottles each year is the essence of Montepeloso's noblest Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, the vines are over 40 years old. "Dark, deep ruby red. Great, expressive nose of cassis, mint, elderberries, in addition fine noble wood and stony hints, ripe red pepper in the aftertaste, noble spice. On the palate full-bodied, with radiant fruit, embedded in still young wood tannin, shows itself closely interwoven, in addition much juiciness, elegant drinking flow, still a child, still needs rest." Falstaff
"Gorgeous aromas of currants, flowers, bark and pine needles. Crushed stone. Full-bodied with crunchy and chewy tannins as well as fresh mushroom and spices. Dark fruits with graphite. Lead pencil. Fresh tannins that are vertical. Drink after 2027 but already so enticing to taste." James Suckling
"The 2021 Gabbro is another hugely promising 2021 from Fabio Chiarelotto. Deep, sensual and layered, the 2021 offers up a heady mix of dark fruit intermingled with scents of tobacco, scorched earth, leather, incense and menthol. Tucked away in the hills of Suvereto near the Tyrrhenian coast - one of the hottest areas of Tuscany - is the picturesque Montepeloso winery of Swiss Fabio Chiarelotto. Because of the high sun exposure and the Mediterranean climate, dense and concentrated fashionable wines are produced here with almost no problem. "Producing wines rich in finesse, on the other hand, is a real challenge," the ambitious winemaker tells us in conversation.
In fact, Fabio cares very little about market trends that determine the production of some neighbouring wineries. Since taking over Montepeloso in 1994, his main concern has been to capture the Val di Cornia growing region and its complex cultivation in the glass. He skilfully exploits the special conditions of the terroir and has always worked in harmony with nature according to the rules of organic viticulture.
In order to realise his sustainable vision, however, the trained historian first had to tear out a large part of the vines in order to plant not only Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon on suitable sites - as many winegrowers in the Maremma do - but also unconventional varieties such as Marselan and Alicante Bouschet or Montepulciano from the other side of the Apennines. All grape varieties that can ripen magnificently in the hot climate of southern Tuscany and the predominant calcareous clay and slate soils.
As a true self-taught winemaker, Chiarelotto has always had the right feeling for the most suitable grape varieties that would enable him to produce a fine, elegant style of wine here. For this reason, some of his wines can be described as powerful, but never heavy or lush. After his first breakthrough in 2002 with his award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon Gabbro, the winemaker also further developed his talent for blending, creating his equally expressive red wines Nardo, Eneo and A Quo.
The extraordinary names of these four top wines have long been a household name on the wine scene and are in absolutely no way inferior to the famous competition from Bolgheri. In order to improve each vintage, the oenological department is supervised by the expert Fabrizio Moltard, who has worked for Angelo Gaja, among others. In addition, since 2007, the Swiss entrepreneur Silvio Denz has been involved in the winery, sharing Fabio's passion and allowing him the necessary space to further develop his ingenious vision. And so it is not surprising that these Maremma wines have little to do with what is usually known from southern Tuscany. SUPERIORE.DE
