“Palistorti di Valgiano” Rosso Colline Lucchesi DOC 2020
"Palistorti" means "crooked stakes" in Italian – and the name is no coincidence. At the beginning of their winemaking career, Laura and Moreno found many limestone boulders in the vineyards, which made the freshly driven stakes crooked and crooked when they were planted. And that's how this exciting second wine got its name, the estate owners reveal in conversation.
Bright ruby red. The aroma is dominated by red and black berries. With a little air, cherries and sour cherries become more pronounced, and something spicy that you can't immediately place. Somehow fresh and yet Mediterranean, but not like Chianti or Brunello. Is it the little bit of Syrah? Or is it this unique terroir? Wherever this spiciness comes from, in combination with this pronounced fruit, it smells simply wonderful. On the palate, it is full-bodied, very juicy and again this unique combination of fruit and spice that makes the wine simply exciting and special. Juicy, finely structured, perfectly balanced, with character and animating acid bite. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red. On the nose aromas of undergrowth, small red fruits and some hints of tobacco and liquorice. Rich, concentrated flavour, soft and spicy at the same time, with compact tannins and a medium finish." Falstaff
"The 2020 Palistorti di Valgiano is a very interesting wine. Intensely aromatic and savory, the 2020 is also quite distinctive. Dried herbs, lavender, mocha, macerated dark cherry and incense soar out of the glass. Wild and a touch eccentric, the 2020 is incredibly distinctive, especially for readers in search of something new." Vinous
"Lots of blackberry, licorice and clove aromas follow through to a medium to full body, tight and slightly austere tannins (in a good way) and a fresh, vivid finish. Racy and bright. Better in a year or two, but already attractive." James Suckling

“Tenuta di Valgiano” Rosso Colline Lucchesi DOC 2017
Dark, translucent ruby red shimmers in the glass, looks elegant at first sight. Inviting scent of red and black fruit aromas, almost a forest berry mix with sour cherries. And then again this spiciness so typical for Tenuta di Valgiano, herbal and mineral, fresh and yet Mediterranean, simply incomparable. On the palate, full-bodied, very juicy, extract-sweet fruit, again accompanied by this mineral spiciness. Juicy, deep, with silky elegant tannin structure, with wonderfully balanced fruit-acid play. A wine with finesse and piquancy, length and ageing potential for a good fifteen to twenty years. This wine should be decanted and allowed to breathe in the carafe for at least one to two hours before drinking. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling ruby with a light garnet edge. Opens with emphatically ripe notes on the nose, of dried plums, lots of blackberry, some cassis. Finely woven tannin on the palate, builds up in many layers, plus well-integrated sweet melting, long and smooth." Falstaff
"The 2017 Tenuta di Valgiano is dense, powerful and beautifully resonant in the glass. There's plenty of richness, but also a feeling of translucence I find quite intriguing. Sweet dried cherry, cedar, tobacco, mint and dried flowers open with a bit of coaxing. The 2017 is a gorgeous wine." Vinous
"The aromas of violets, berries, tar and sandalwood give a perfumed and subtle impression. Full-bodied with a firm, racy tannin structure and a long, curated finish. Shows freshness and tension for this hot vintage. Serious. Drink after 2025." James Suckling

Moreno Petrini comes from the Milan shoe industry, his partner Laura di Collobiano from a noble family in Turin and used to sell luxury yachts. Together they traveled the world until they discovered a run-down vineyard with Renaissance villa in the hills above Lucca and plunged into a new phase of life with a lot of construction work with the biodynamic oenologist Saverio Petrilli.
"Wine has always been a special culture for us, a passion." – Moreno Petrini
Lucca is a tourist magnet, because unlike the other Tuscan cities, it was able to stay out of the many destructive wars. It is said that through the production of silk there was always enough money available to make peace with one another "buy" which is why the historical old town and the city walls are practically completely preserved. However, it is hardly known as a wine region, although the Colline Lucchesi (hill around Lucca) was already awarded a DOC in 1968.
Visionary and extremely success
Cross-beginners in an underestimated region. Not a good place to start. Since 2001 also biodynamic. Nobody here understood that back then anyway. Even today not really, even if the success is recognized in the meantime. Today the Tenuta di Valgiano is the leading vineyard of the region. High awards from national and international wine critics are the reward and show that this is not a project of a rich couple to drop out, but that here with a lot of love and effort an agricultural estate is led to success. Besides wine, they also produce finest olive oil, honey and breed pigs.
Historical heritage with optimal conditions.
From the winery you can see not only the wonderful town of Lucca in the valley, but also the surrounding vineyards, which stand on deposits of former glaciers on limestone marl and ferruginous red clay. In the north, perhaps 40-50 km as the crow flies, the Apennine rises, whose winds cool the nights considerably, while during the day the Mediterranean climate prevails and the reflections of the nearby Ligurian Sea in the west intensify the sun's rays. The coast is only 20 kilometres away as the crow flies and during the day the warm sea air blows over. These very unique soil and micro-climate conditions actually offer ideal conditions for viticulture, as the Etruscans already recognised – and it is therefore astonishing that this region is not much more famous, although wine has been cultivated here for two thousand years.
Autochthonous diversity for sustainable results.
The grape varieties cultivated here are also quite independent. In addition to the typical varieties of Tuscany, there have also been French varieties here since Napoleon, because around 200 years ago he established the Lucchean Republic, which was dependent on France. That's why in old vineyards the whites, Vermentino, Greco, Grecchetto, Malvasia and Trebbiano have always been joined by Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc. And with the red grape varieties Sangiovese – here called Sangioveto - was historically always dominant, in former times mostly like a mixed sentence with Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo and Colorino intermixed, but in addition also Merlot and Syrah - the latter feels particularly well here.
A success story. Wine from Tuscany, which smells and tastes completely different than one would expect from Tuscany. Biodynamic, sustainable, independent – and really good. SUPERIORE.DE
