“Monteti” Rosso Toscana IGT 2018
Rich, deep dark ruby colour with a fine violet sheen. Compact and appealing nose, showing crisp fruit, especially blackcurrants and mulberries, underpinned by fine chocolate tones. Extremely precise on the palate too: ripe, fresh fruit, opens with firm, densely woven tannins, develops rich pressure, then juicy and long-lasting on the final. SUPERIORE.DE

With Tenuta Monteti, the married couple Paolo and Gemma Baratta fulfilled a long-cherished dream shortly before the turn of the millennium. The 60-hectare estate is located in Maremma, around 15 kilometres from the sea, south of Capalbio in the province of Grosseto on the Monteti hill. Eva has been the director of the Tenuta since 2010. She is the daughter of the founders, who grew up surrounded by the vineyards and now runs the company hand in hand with her husband Javier Pedrazzini. In 2023, the winery celebrated its 25th anniversary - with a clear track record of success, as the Monteti wines are a clear expression of their terroir, balanced and without gimmickry.
Mindful management for nuanced results.
The vineyards of Tenuta Monteti, which are 145 metres high on average, consist of four contiguous sections planted with 6,600 vines per hectare in a south and south-west facing position. Mainly red varieties grow and thrive there in 28 plots of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Alicante-Bouschet and Merlot. The stony soils have an appropriate clay content that retains moisture. They are organically fertilised in winter. Eva Baratta puts it like this: "If you look closely, you realise that the vineyards are a collection of small plots. Each of them is vinified and matured separately and only at the end do we decide which of them can be part of our three wines." The Baratta family keeps a constant eye on the most important meteorological data thanks to their own weather station - nothing is left to chance here.
Sustainable & Carefully in harmony with nature.
In the modern cellar designed by architect Sergio Bracco, the wines are produced using proprietary vinification and ageing methods that are subject to continuous refinement. The laws of gravity prevail and the use of pumps is avoided. As indigenous yeasts are used for alcoholic fermentation, the grapes have undergone spontaneous fermentation since 2007. The grapes are first processed separately in wood - sometimes also in steel - before they are later blended into the cuvées. The proportion of sulphites is kept low in the cellar. A great deal of sensitivity and care is exercised when using wood to age the wines. The first vintage, 2004, yielded surprisingly good results from the then still young vines. The consideration of biodiversity and careful cultivation are important constants of the V.I.V.A.-certified company.
The three musketeers: Monteti, Caburnio and Rosé TM.
Three wines of great quality and distinct personality are produced at Tenuta Monteti. The Monteti, the flagship of the estate, consists of 40 to 55% Petit Verdot, to which Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon are added. The Caburnio is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (50 to 60%), Alicante-Bouschet and Merlot. Both complex and elegant growths from Tenuta Monteti have a similar style, but are subject to different vinification and ageing processes. Since 2015, the triumvirate has been completed by the Rosé TM, consisting of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. A perfect rosato, reminiscent of the typical sea breeze and the picturesque sunrise in Tuscany.
Javier Pedrazzini sums up the philosophy perfectly: "We only use the best grapes and produce the three cuvées with the firm vision of telling the story of the unspoilt beauty of our landscape". Tenuta Monteti proves with every vintage that this kind of "storytelling" is extremely well received. SUPERIORE.DE
