Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2022
Laura Brunelli's Rosso is a blend of Sangiovese grapes from Podernovone - 500 metres above sea level on the south-eastern slope of Montalcino with a south-western exposure - and Canalicchio on the northern side of the village. The vines for the first vineyard were planted in 1998, those for the second in 1989. "Our Rosso is made from the same grapes as the Brunello," says Laura Brunelli. The wine is traditionally aged for a year in large oak barrels. It is extremely fresh every year and not without complexity. The aromas of redcurrants, wild strawberries, black pepper and juniper are followed by a bright bouquet of red fruits on the medium-bodied palate. It has velvety tannins and a refreshing, integrated acidity. A really great interpretation of the terroir and, as every year, a little Brunello. SUPERIORE.DE
"A lively, fruit-driven Rosso with notes of red cherries, berries and some potpourri. Juicy, fresh and fine-boned on the palate, with beautiful acidity and a precise, medium-long finish." James Suckling
"The Rosso di Montalcino 2022 is exotic: blood oranges and cloves mingle with dried black cherries, sage and crushed stones. This flows across the palate, fine and feminine, with lively acidity and soothing ripe red and blue fruits. It leaves a gentle tannic tension and a chewy feel that tapers long and haunting dark." Vinous
"The Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto 2022 Rosso di Montalcino also shows its own distinctive point of richness, adding to a more complex interpretation of this entry-level wine. Dried fruit, cinnamon stick and crushed stone are the markers. I highly recommend this bottle for its balanced fruit flavors and mid-weight texture. I would venture to say that this wine is closer to Brunello status than it is to Rosso di Montalcino." Wine Advocate

"Super-floral profile, with rose petal, vinous and rich dark fruit aromas. Smooth attack with a medium body and crisp acidity. The tannins are crunchy yet still quite astringent. Will improve with a year of aging, otherwise it’s ready to drink." James Suckling

“Amor Costante” Rosso Toscana IGT 2020
Deep ruby red colour, lush notes of cherries, strawberries and sweet oak spice, vanilla and black pepper. The Sangiovese gives the blend great freshness and is in perfect balance with the silky and soft tannins of the Merlot. Overall rich, but always elegant and with great persistence. A complex, excellently structured red of absolute Supertuscan quality. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto 2020 Amor Costante is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Sangiovese and offers a lovely richness with a medium body interwoven with blackberry, wild plum, spice and sweet tobacco. The softness and texture come from the Merlot, while the Sangiovese provides freshness and fresh cherry flavours. Only 2,360 bottles were produced." Wine Advocate
"The 2020 Amor Costante keeps the glass swirling as dried violets, stone dust and exotic spices accentuate an enticing blend of wild berries and red plums. This is velvety smooth with medium-bodied weight, ushering in textural waves of red and blue fruits offset by sour citrus tones and saline-tinged acidity. It finishes long and structured with fine-grained tannins and a tart resonance of currants and licorice, yet the 2020 remains surprisingly fresh through it all. Patience will be required, yet also rewarded. What a treat." Vinous

“Amor Costante” Rosso Toscana IGT 2021
Deep ruby red colour, lush notes of cherries, strawberries and sweet oak spice, vanilla and black pepper. The Sangiovese gives the blend great freshness and is in perfect balance with the silky and soft tannins of the Merlot. Overall rich, but always elegant and with great persistence. A complex, excellently structured red wine in absolute Super Tuscan quality and produced in a limited edition of just under 3,000 bottles. SUPERIORE.DE
"A round, juicy and flavourful red wine. The nose shows notes of blackcurrant, cassis and sweet spices. It is medium to full-bodied with fine tannins. Fine texture with control. A lively core of juicy berries in the centre meets vibrant spices and herbs leading into the lively finish." James Suckling
"This wine is a lot of fun with bright cherry, pomegranate and chewy Jolly Rancher candy aromas. That combination adds to the brightness and richness of the mouthfeel. You gotta love this departure from classic Montalcino. This is not a terroir-driven wine, but it's a fun wine to drink nonetheless." Wine Advocate

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018
Laura Brunelli's Brunello is an outstanding reflection of the appellation every year. A floral bouquet, the purest expression of cherry and strawberry imaginable, hints of mint, sage and cedar dust - all are found in its stunning bouquet. The youthful density of the ripe primary fruit contrasts with salty minerality and lively acidity, leaving a cascading and crisp impression on the palate. SUPERIORE.DE
"Scents of wild strawberries and violets; well balanced texture, the tannins tight, elegant course, pithy fresh finish." Vinum
"Shiny medium ruby red. Spicy, mineral nose with fragrant fruit but not really opening up yet. Elegant, long flavours of raspberry and fruit with plenty of fresh acidity and grippy, gravelly tannins. Still youthful and will take some time to come together." Jancis Robinson
"Enticing nose of rosemary, wild cherries, lemon peel, chocolate strawberries and pralines. It is medium-bodied with a bright, fruit-driven palate framed by fine-grained tannins. All in balance. Drinkable from 2023." James Suckling
"The dark, seductive Brunello di Montalcino 2018 rumbles from the glass with a blend of crushed plums and black cherries, complemented by nuances of grated sage. It is soft and deep, engulfing the palate with ripe wild berries and spices, underlined by a spicy herbaceous steak. A web of fine tannins creates a truly classic impression, while mentholated herbs and hints of wild strawberries keep popping up. This youthfully masked beauty will need minimal ageing to be at its best." Vinous
"As with the 2017 vintage, Laura Brunelli will not be releasing a Riserva. Instead, the Olmo vineyard, which typically forms the backbone of the Riserva, is an important component in this Annata Brunello, making a beautiful and complete wine. Mint, lavender and fennel lead on the nose, while sweet, juicy persimmon and crisp pomegranate provide the backdrop on the palate, and the chalky tannins are quite insidious in their grip. On the surface it's approachable, but its substance, intrigue and backbone suggest more to come." Decanter
"This red wine with its cherry and raspberry aromas also offers flavours of eucalyptus, minerals, earth and almonds. Lively and balanced, with an intense, delicious finish." Wine Spectator
"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino captures the essence and spirit of the Sangiovese grape very well, a grape that in the right hands delivers endlessly nuanced and complex results. This wine reveals wild cherry, blue violet, blood orange, rusty nail and sweet earth. Hints of scorched earth or baked clay highlight the warmest months in this growing cycle. The result is balanced and fresh. I have mentioned alcohol levels throughout this review, and although the 14% registered here is still quite high, it is below the average of its peers. This is a very well done job." Wine Advocate

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2020
Anyone looking for the truth in Sangiovese will find it here: Laura Brunelli's Montalcino has been a stunning wine full of vitality, life and energy for years. It displays an almost outrageous degree of clarity and openness. It unfolds brightly and radiantly with lasting purity, elegance and length. This Brunello shows extreme precision and focus, both on the nose and in the mouthfeel. Wild berries, blue flowers and liquorice come together in perfection, and it is impossible to surpass this quality at this price. SUPERIORE.DE
"Almost medium ruby red colour. Cardamom and Moroccan leather notes on the nose, as well as iodised, mineral notes. Compact, youthful and cherry-fruity on the palate, with delicious tannins that take the lead in the aromatic fruit finish. Great potential." Jancis Robinson
"Due to the high temperatures and dry conditions, the quantities were even lower than the winery's already modest average yields," says Laura Brunelli. For this reason, she decided to forgo a Riserva in 2020 and use the best of the production for this bottling. This bottling is an example of the beautiful floral character of the vintage, with scents of lavender and plum blossom wafting from the glass. Exotic spices, cinchona bark and bitter orange add complexity to the palate, which shows the warmth of summer with seductive ripeness and indulgent structure. It finishes with a gentle pull of talc-like tannins and a welcome tension." Decanter
"The Brunello di Montalcino 2020 seduces with a seductive bouquet of crushed cherries and strawberries, emphasised by notes of mint, cedar wood and saddle leather. It is a graceful and elegant style with a medium body and pure notes of wild berries supported by a lively acidity. The 2020 lingers with nuances of liquorice and blue and purple flowers, leaving a subtle coating of fine tannins that frame the experience beautifully." Vinous
"A core of pure cherry and plum is framed by mineral and wild herb flavors in this rich, dense red. Harmonious and remains fresh and long, with the ripe fruit leaving a lasting impression. Shows fine intensity." Wine Spectator
"Balsamic and complex profile of this wine. The nose exudes dried flowers, liquorice, raspberries and redcurrants. Very crisp and juicy, with full body and bony, chalky tannins due to its youth. Nevertheless, it is sweet and balanced on the finish. It still needs some time to integrate better, but it's a gourmet wine with very good substance for the long haul." James Suckling
"The Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is balanced, finely structured and has a soft consistency on the palate. There is a lot of life in this lively Brunello. Red and violet fruits merge with sweet earth and iris roots. I particularly like the mouthfeel that is achieved here. It is this combination of richness and extreme suppleness that characterises it." Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2019
The Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2019 is a fully impressive creation with a unique and interesting interpretation of this classic vintage. The wine is bold and bright, with great intensity that accompanies it from start to finish. Dark cherry and blackberry flavours stand in balanced contrast to layers of spice, cumin and cardamom. Despite its intensity and richness, this Riserva is very balanced and never oversteps its bounds. The same applies to the mouthfeel. On the palate, it offers a dense, rich texture with complex fruit flavours and bright acidity. The 2019 vintage is once again an exceptional wine from this incredibly ambitious winery! SUPERIORE.DE
"Among the wineries that do not produce a Riserva in every vintage, Gianni Brunelli's last release was in 2016. While it embodies the depth and classicism of that vintage, this 2019 plays with the expressiveness and elegance of the vintage. The aromas of lavender and cherry blossom against a backdrop of dry, sun-drenched earth are wonderfully clear. The palate is equally perfumed, with accents of fennel and tarragon, and the juicy acidity underlines the sheer wealth of flavour. The wine has a fine, almost delicate structure, yet is persistent and long-lasting." Decanter
"A hint of white smoke and sweet sage gives way to minty black cherries and a hint of balsamic spice as the seductive Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2019 blossoms in the glass. It presents a sweet and sour sensation that washes over the palate with a soft and supple texture, while ripe wild berries are lapped up by brilliant acidity. A hint of tart citrus embellishes the finish. The 2019 finishes long but structured and intense, leaving a saturation of blackberries and a savoury herbal aftertaste. This is an exceptionally refined and graceful Riserva from Gianni Brunelli. Fantastic." Vinous
"Like some of the best wines, this is characterised by bright fruit and drinkability, but also has tremendous structure and potential for the long haul. On the nose, it shines with youthfulness, showing telltale raspberry freshness with smoky, woody and liquorice depth. The attack is full-bodied with elegant, dense, velvety tannins, structured and refined. The finish is crisp, long and very polished despite the frame. The best wine that has ever come from here." James Suckling
"The Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a wonderfully intense and rich expression of Sangiovese. Only 3,600 bottles and some larger formats were produced. The wine is skilfully played with hydrated tannins, powerful fruit flavours and a long finish. This epic wine follows in the footsteps of the 2016 vintage. This winery does an excellent job of combining power and elegance in perfect harmony and balance." Wine Advocate

"People who really understand about quality know that it is mainly due to personal effort and empathy, not intensive mechanisation." Laura Brunelli
Gianni Brunelli opened an old osteria in the old town of Siena after years of working in a factory. It turned out that the daring career change was just the right thing to do: 41 years later, his famous Osteria Le Logge is still one of the most important cult places in Tuscan gastronomy and the unique ambience is one of Sting's and Gianna Nannini's favourite restaurants.
After this gastronomic success story, Gianni was drawn back to his home Montalcino. Determined, he bought the vineyard Le Chiuse di Sotto in 1987, because his late father had worked there as a farmer. In memory of his father Dino, a small piece of the vines planted by him in 1947 is still preserved. In the mid-1990s, the Podernovone estate, located in the southeast, was added, which was inaugurated in 2015 as the official headquarters of the winery.
They say that behind every great man there is also a strong woman. Gianni Brunelli was a great man who could always count on the support of his remarkable wife Laura, who was always by his side until his unexpected death in 2008. Today, Laura continues her husband's tradition and values at the Le Chiuse di Sotto winery.
Six and a half hectares of vines are cultivated organically and take over 400 hours of work per unit. Brunello di Montalcino has a world-class reputation, and the wines from the Brunelli house confirm its level every year. The other wines like Amor Costante, a Sangiovese-Merlot blend, or the single-varietal Merlot Toscano IGT and Brunelli's Rosso di Montalcino are in no way inferior to the competition.
The Brunellis' quiet flight of fancy is not least due to the precise work in the vineyard: "It is actually totally normal to produce balanced quality wines if you bring ripe and healthy grapes into the cellar. Quality primarily comes from the work in the vineyard", Laura, who is now supported by Gianni's brother Adriano, tells. The demanding quality philosophy of the founding couple is still reflected in all wines, thanks to which the memory of Gianni Brunelli will not be forgotten.
"There are many different ways to give meaning to one's life. Ours is to make wine so good that those who drink it are moved to goodwill and friendship," explains the Sardinian native. Each label is adorned by the artwork "Elvira with Hat" - a tribute to Gianni's mother Elvira, created for Gianni and Laura by painter and Harvard economist Richard M. Goodwin. The original still hangs at the entrance of the Osteria Le Logge in Siena. SUPERIORE.DE
