Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2022
Mastrojanni's rich and concentrated Rosso di Montalcino smells of a dark, seductive blend of sweet herbs, menthol and tobacco intertwined with dried cherries and redcurrants. It soothes with a deep, silky texture, which is then replaced by tart red berries and savoury spices over a stimulating acidity. Finishes balsamic with a hint of sour citrus and sweet, polished tannins that frame the experience beautifully. SUPERIORE.DE
"Mid to deep ruby. Savoury cherry fruit that is a little reduced and in need of lots of air. Lush and aromatic cherry fruit on the palate but not heavy at all. Lots of juice and fruit filled out by chewy tannins. Long and fresh and delivers on all counts." Jancis Robinson
"Intense notes of ripe blackberries and pressed flowers such as roses and violets. Light to medium body with dusty but ripe tannins, ripe, jammy fruit character and juicy acidity." James Suckling
"The Mastrojanni 2022 Rosso di Montalcino is a beautiful, unforced wine with just the right amount of bing cherry and pomegranate to add lift and energy to the bouquet. It continues on the palate with medium intensity, good balance and sweet fruit flavours." Wine Advocate

“Botrys” Moscadello di Montalcino DOC 2015 · in gift box
Moscadello was originally the first wine from the Montalcino appellation, long before the triumphant rise of Brunello. Mastrojanni's Moscadello di Montalcino is a blend of late harvested Moscato, Malvasia di Candia and Sauvignon Bianco. The wine matures for two years in barriques and tonneaux. Intensely fragrant bouquet with plenty of power and character, aromas of candied fruit, honey and brown sugar. These notes are reproduced with every sip with impressively brilliant precision and astonishing freshness. This rare wine (only 1,300 bottles were filled) matures for two years in barriques and tonneaux and is traditionally enjoyed instead of a dessert or with cantuccini. Very delicate. SUPERIORE.DE

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2020
Mastrojanni's 2020 vintage has a juicy, fleshy feel that adds to the overall intensity of the wine. In the glass, rich fruit, baking spices and a hint of rum cake. The wine is dark and velvety in appearance, the mouthfeel is balanced, smooth and lingering. It is quickly accessible with its full-bodied appeal and you can enjoy this wine over the next few years without having to wait long. SUPERIORE.DE
"Vivid black cherries are complemented by minty herbs, cedar shavings and hints of stone dust as the 2020 Brunello di Montalcino evolves in the glass. It floods the palate with juicy textures and ripe wild berry fruits as an air of lavender and sweet spice amass toward the close. The 2020 tapers off with spicy tension, leaving a tinge of sour citrus and a tart cranberry concentration, all framed by well-rounded tannins." Vinous
"The Mastrojanni 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is a little shy initially. A few more years, even months, of bottle age should get it to shine. The bouquet is detailed and precise with small forest fruits, dried rose, earth and light spice. It pieces together well over a bright, medium-weight mouthfeel." Wine Advocate
"Restrained yet intense wine. The nose is fresh with red cherries and pomegranates, integrated violets and a rose-water touch, as well as a vibrant, schist undertone. Full-bodied and graceful, with super elegant tannins, juicy acidity and a long, tense finish." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019
The fruit for this Brunello comes from a 14.4 hectare south-facing vineyard with loamy soils and lots of boulders. Complex, dark and earthy bouquet of ripe black cherries, enriched with notes of dried flowers, spices, crushed stones and a hint of animal musk. The palate reveals silky textures and pure Sangiovese fruit, underpinned by earthy tones supported by a network of minerals and tannins. The mouthfeel is always lean, tangy and soft, although you can feel the wine's full body and great appeal at all times. The final is polished and refined and lasts for several minutes. SUPERIORE.DE
"Elegant, bright ruby red colour. Great complexity on the nose, a potpourri of mint, blood orange, candied cherry and elegant spice. Juicy, polished and present on the palate, with great red berry fruit, expressive and clear, medium-bodied and elegant, drinks very well, repeatedly juicy on the final." Falstaff
"This red wine is characterised by aromas of plums, ripe cherries, wild herbs and iron. On the palate, the purity of the fruit unfolds together with accents of tobacco and bergamot. The wine is solidly built, with dusty tannins that vie for attention with the fruit on the long finish." Wine Spectator
"Cocounut husk, vanilla and clove on the nose. Loads of plum, raspberry, dusty tannins, finish big with sour cherries and aromatic herbs." Decanter
"Deep red berry fruit, sweet spices, cinnamon and cloves introduce the Brunello di Montalcino 2019. The Brunello di Montalcino is silky through and through, with a depth of red fruits and spices accompanied by juicy acidity. Liquorice and cloves combine with tart raspberry, while the 2019 finishes surprisingly fresh and lightly structured." Vinous
"The Mastrojanni 2019 Brunello di Montalcino has a pretty bouquet with dark fruit and something exotic reminiscent of camphor ash, wood fire ash, garrigue and dried herbs. It is rich and evenly concentrated with fine chalk on the tannins and good phenolic ripeness. It is an excellent accompaniment to grilled game or French magret de canard. This pure local bottling does a great job and is ultimately more approachable than many of its competitors." Wine Advocate
"From vineyards between 180 and 400 metres, impeccable processing in the cellar for a wine of great freshness. Notes of wild strawberries on the nose, a hint of rose and star anise, with mentholated hints. On the palate, savoury tannins, mentholated and with a return of small fruits." Luca Gardini

Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna Loreto” DOCG 2017
The approx. 1.6 hectare single vineyard Loreto is situated on a slope directly next to the winery and has an ideal south-east exposure. Bright berry bouquet with notes of ripe cherries, plums, cassis, leather and spices. The rich palate reveals warm tones of game, Indian spices and cured meat, topped with a surprising intensity of bright red cherries. An extremely well-balanced and long Brunello that truly does not lack power and character. SUPERIORE.DE
"Flattering notes of maraschino cherries and chocolate, also the herbal nuances well integrated; precise texture, the distinctive tannins and the fresh acidity form a symbiosis, combines melting and fullness, opulent sweet berry and yet spicy the final." Vinum
"Intense bouquet with ethereal spicy notes like tobacco and leather, behind it a beautiful (forest) berry fruit. On the palate with enormously juicy-melting impact, showing a refined complexity with ripe fruit, polished tannin and complex spice." Weinwisser
"Sparkling ruby with a pronounced garnet rim. Impressive nose with notes of tobacco, dark wild raspberries and some leather. Lots of melting on the palate, ripe berry fruit, opens up with fine-meshed tannin in many layers, long finish." Falstaff
"Cherry and orange peel with some fresh herbs follow through to a medium to full body with a compressed, polished palate and a long, firmly structured finish that gives the wine form and texture for the vintage." James Suckling
"While Mastrojanni will not be releasing its iconic Schiena d'Asino bottling in 2017, the estate produced a lovely Vigna Loreto. The 1.5ha parcel was planted in 2000 with seven different clones bearing small berries. It offers an intriguing mix of florals and cocoa with blood and iron. The tannins are polished without being too polite, wrapping around a core of dense blackberry. Despite its fruit concentration, this remains midweight and tangy, with a mineral, savoury drive. It's well worth seeking out in this vintage." Decanter
"The Mastrojanni 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto is another terrific interpretation of this hot and dry vintage, only in this case the grapes come from a special southeast-facing plot. Vigna Loreto is tonic, sharp and focused but also generous and open-knit. It offers a broad display of black and purple fruits, along with spice, peat moss and crushed flowers. Few producers were able to achieve this level of elegance in 2017." Wine Advocate

Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna Loreto” DOCG 2018
The 1.6-hectare Loreto vineyard is located on a slope right next to the winery and has an ideal south-east exposure. Vigna Loreto is only vinified in the best vintages and is an even more intense interpretation of the Sangiovese grape. On the palate, the texture is both creamy and robust, with a depth and fullness that make it very rich and exceptional. With further aeration, beautiful notes of black fruits, tobacco and spices. Aristocratic, powerful and very long. SUPERIORE.DE
"Quite a deep, somewhat tarry aroma of ripe black and red berries with a hint of mushrooms, iron, tobacco, pepper and a little dried herbs. Ripe, firm, rather dark fruit, coffee-spicy wood flavours, some bitter chocolate and smoke, present, ripe, still a hint of drying tannin, clearly salty in the background, a hint of dried herbs and tobacco, a hint of bread crust, deep and quite concentrated, gains expression and harmony with air, long, firm, tart finish with noble juice and cigar box. Gains weight over days and should definitely be left to mature." Wein-Plus
"Bright garnet red colour with a light rim. Opens on the nose with notes of preserved cherries and plums, followed by spicy juniper berries and cigar box. Blossoms beautifully on the palate, lots of sweet melting, embedded fine-meshed tannins, ripe fruit, firm pressure on the final." Falstaff
"Spicy and fragrant notes of sour cherries, redcurrants, bay leaves, charred bark, tobacco, rosemary stems and toasted wood. It is full-bodied with firm, polished tannins. Deep and sensual dark fruit and roasted flavours. Try it in the year 2024." James Suckling
"Pebble and tufa soils for this successful Brunello vintage. Raspberry jam on the nose, with notes of marjoram and lemon thyme, then nuances of iris. Iodised tannins on the palate, again with floral notes." Luca Gardini
"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto rises from the glass with a beguiling mix of crushed ash stones that fade into dried cherries and cloves. The palate is seductively soft and supple, with polished red fruits and a pleasant inner sweetness accompanied by an evolving minerality and a hint of sour citrus. The finish is of outstanding length, balancing fine tannins with a saturation of tart wild berries that lingers. This is one of the finest interpretations of Vigna Loreto I have ever tasted. Masterfully made." Vinous
"An elegant red with an attractive blend of cherry, raspberry, red flower, mineral and rosemary flavours. Juicy and lively, with refined, resonant tannins that support the long finish. Very balanced and expressive." Wine Spectator
"The Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto 2018 has a restrained, dry and elegant personality with a long, silky texture that gently caresses the palate. The essence of Sangiovese with its wild side, dried raspberries, blue flowers and crushed stones, comes through with precise precision. This wine is a bull's eye in a vintage that was not always easy to handle." Wine Advocate
"An indulgent nose of chocolate, coffee, earth and dried figs leads into an equally decadent palate that hits all those notes again, but in the best way, like your favorite song on repeat. The balance between sweet and savory concludes with a bitter, biting finish that's elevated by a warming current of acid." Wine Enthusiast
"This wine is relatively dark, though translucent now, and the scents are sweet, warm, open and inviting, built around a core of ripe plum. The palate is deep and secondary, implying that the plum is beginning to give way to the softer but less precise fruit of ripeness; there are also prominent but well-rounded tannins, while the acidity is more vibrant and vital than one might expect from the flavours. An excellent Brunello for the middle ripening period." Decanter

Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna Loreto” DOCG 2019
Once upon a time, there was a vineyard that was particularly spoilt by the Montalcino sun; it still bears the name Vigna Loreto to this day. Only in the best vintages does a Brunello come from this exposed site that is bursting with richness, complexity and assertiveness. It possesses a textural depth and balance that is captivating. Fruit, spice and very unique nuances such as savoury herbs, liquorice, tobacco and a firm tannin make this impressive wine monument linger on the palate and in the memory for a long time. With every sip, it opens up further layers and you might almost sink into it, such is the shift in the boundaries of what is comparable. The 2019 Vigna Loreto is not only extremely elegant, but also profound and almost outrageously juicy. SUPERIORE.DE
"Opulent nose with woody spice, backed by ripe red and blue fruits (redcurrants, wild berries) with ethereal herbal aromas, also floral notes such as lavender. Rich palate with intense fruit, ripe and taut, framed by grippy, polished tannins and supporting freshness." Weinwisser
"Sparkling ruby-garnet colour with a brightening rim. Opens with notes of smoke and tobacco, then lots of pomegranate and plum, light mineral components. Present tannin on the palate, which is very well integrated over the course, firm pressure, lots of juicy fruit." Falstaff
"Overlooking the River Orcia, the south-east-facing Loreto vineyard rises 400 metres above sea level. Tasted alongside the estate's Brunello, it definitely shows a greater stage presence. Intense plum and cherry flavours intertwine with exotic spices, chinotto and sweet herbs. The inner flavours of the vintage are in the foreground and emphasise the compact fruit. The gravelly tannins support the whole, but are more elegant than powerful. The wine finishes with a hint of liquorice." Decanter
"Blackberries, menthol, sage, stone dust and cloves characterise the youthful, restrained 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto. It flows lightly across the palate, silky with depths of ripe raspberries and sour cherries, while fine-grained tannins saturate the finish. The finish is savoury and long, structured yet lively and stimulates the imagination with its future potential. Hints of cocoa, lavender and topical leaf linger and seem to last well over a minute. I am impressed." Vinous
"This wine shows cracked white pepper and wet slate, giving you a clear sense of place. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto is precise and well-defined, but as the wine opens up, you get interludes of ripe fruit, blackcurrant and oak spice. The wine is multi-faceted with many layers and angles. The palate is bright cherry with good length that leads into fine, chalky tannins. This wine offers an authentic flavour of Montalcino." Wine Advocate
"A soil with tufa prevalence that gives this Brunello great tension. Red mulberry, notes of lemon thyme and peony. Salty tannins on the palate finish with thyme and floral notes." Luca Gardini

Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna Loreto” DOCG 2020
Vigna Loreto from the sun-drenched single vineyard of the same name right next to the winery is only vinified in the best vintages and delivers an even more intense interpretation of the Sangiovese grape every year. If you are looking for a soft and contemporary expression of Sangiovese, this is the wine for you. It offers a deep richness and texture infused with black fruits, spice and tobacco. This wine goes a step beyond the normal boundaries of Brunello in terms of richness and extraction. For all its undoubtedly beguiling opulence, it is nevertheless a straightforward and altogether superb wine that will gain in finesse and elegance with age. SUPERIORE.DE
"Complex bouquet of plums and flowers, also nuances of orange zest, tobacco and spices; beautifully polished, with vivid acidity and robust tannins, the polished finish on notes of berries and lilac." Vinum
"The Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto 2020 is tightly closed in its youthful state. An eruption of crushed ash stones combines with grilled herbs, dusty earth and dried black cherries. The wine is surprisingly juicy and energetic, with a creamy texture yet remarkable lift, showing ripe red and blue fruits underscored by fresh acidity. Its minerality comes through on the finish, along with sweet tannins that add a lovely frame as notes of citrus, blackberry and cocoa fade out." Vinous
"This wine focuses on violet-scented aromas, cherries and raspberries, as well as a slightly toasty undertone. It is very flavoursome on the palate, with crisp acidity, firm but ripe tannins and a polished finish." James Suckling
"The Mastrojanni 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto encompasses dark fruit nuances of plums, mulberries and pomegranate concentrate. As the bouquet gains air, blue flowers, grilled rosemary and root beer emerge. The effect is powerful, but at the same time nuanced and complex. Compared to many other wines from the 2020 vintage, this wine has a greater structural density and better length." Wine Advocate

Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna Schiena d’Asino” DOCG 2016
Schiena d'Asino is a small vineyard from which this fabulous Brunello is produced exclusively in excellent years. Schiena captivates with its richness and overall intensity and is endowed with a lot of energy and varietal purity. Sage, rosemary and a host of Mediterranean herbs open up first, followed by graphite, smoke, incense, dark spices and black stone fruits. Wild, intensely mineral notes underpin the fruit and capture the essence of the great site. For an exceptional wine, this Brunello remains remarkably light on its feet, yet it is an introspective, brooding wine that will need at least a few years to show all it has to offer. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling, rich ruby garnet. Finely marked nose with notes of rose petals, some raspberry, fine spice in the background. Builds up richly on the palate, dark berry fruit, opens with grippy, dense tannin, still shows itself very young." Falstaff
"Developing mid ruby. Brooding and intense on the nose with hints of graphite and filled out by oak. Full mouth of juicy, spicy cherry fruit framed by bags of delicious, chewy tannins. Very long and deep and gorgeously balanced. Tactile fireworks. Ready now but will hold." Jancis Robinson
"A historic vineyard for the denomination and for the winery, which returns in a version of great concentration, aged in Alliers oak. Nose of wild plum, with touches of Mediterranean scrub and chinotto. Mouth with savory-salty tannins, finish with fruity return." Luca Gardini
"This is structured and muscular, yet in a toned and polished way. It’s full-bodied with a linear and racy nature, showing focused black-cherry, orange-peel and berry character. Flavorful and extremely long. Better after 2024." James Suckling
"Forest floor, violet and camphor aromas come to the forefront along with whiffs of toasted nut on this full-bodied red. It's elegant and structured, featuring dried cherry, tobacco and licorice framed in tightly knit, fine-grained tannins, while fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Give it time to fully develop." Wine Enthusiast
"A lithe, focused red, evoking strawberry, cherry, currant, spice and tobacco flavors. Shows intensity and grip, with accents of leather and licorice chiming in on the finish. Well-structured and lingers on the chalky, mineral aftertaste." Wine Spectator
"Planted in 1978, the 1.2ha Schiena d’Asino plot boasts a southeast to southwest exposition reaching almost 400 metres above sea level on stony, clay soil. Long ageing in 16-hectolitre French oak casks is followed by a year in bottle before release. The 2016 surfaces from its shell slowly and beguilingly, bestowing dried lavender, sage blossom and mint with a heady suggestion of truffles. The rich, dark red-fruited palate is framed by sandy, dusty tannins. Some heat rises on the mid-palate but is soaked up by plush layers, finishing on a salty liquorice note." Decanter
"The late-release 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d'Asino captivates with a display of sweet smoke and crushed stone giving way to dusty black raspberry and savory herbs. It’s silky-smooth and cool-toned, peppering the senses with mineral-tinged woodland berries and hints of spice. Grippy tannins build toward the close, saturating the palate beneath red inner florals. This tapers off with heroic structure but also the primary fruits to balance. The 2016 Vigna Schiena d’Aine is a dark stallion of a Brunello that's packed full of potential." Vinous
"The Mastrojanni 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d'Asino (with only 6,000 bottles made) is a joy. This classic 2016 vintage was extremely kind to Sangiovese, but not all producers were able to harness this level of varietal purity, elegance and sheer energy. This soulful wine is indeed best characterized by its inner electricity. The "donkey's back," or Schiena d'Asino, is a special vineyard site where grapes enjoy long sun hours and cool nighttime temperatures." Wine Advocate

Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna Schiena d’Asino” DOCG 2019
The fruit for this wine comes from a single vineyard that stretches over the crest of a hill. The name Schiena d'Asino (donkey ridge) is a reminder of this unique geography. The purity of the fruit is breathtaking and the wine emphasises the qualities that make Sangiovese one of the noblest of all Italian grapes. It offers a crystalline intensity with forthcoming flavours of bright cherries, balsamic herbs, aniseed, pressed violets and spice. This ensemble is balanced and nuanced. It shows amazing depth and complexity. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling ruby garnet colour. Clear and profound nose, rich notes of ripe heart cherries, blackberries, tobacco and some molasses. Polished attack and finish, fine-meshed tannins in many layers, interwoven with fine melting, firm pressure." Falstaff
"The 2019 vintage delivers powerful flavours with black and violet fruits. There are also spices and charcoal flavours from the extended ageing in the cellar. It finishes with grainy flavours of espresso or Turkish coffee and a generous, full-bodied mouthfeel. Only 5,928 bottles were produced." Wine Advocate
"Bright fruit on the nose, raspberries, fresh peach skin and citrus notes such as orange peel, plus violets and earthy minerality. Full-bodied, with mouth-filling, very aromatic concentration, crisp acidity and velvety, orange-soaked tannins. As with a wine destined for ageing, there is a controlled austerity. A real beauty now, but it will continue to develop for many years to come." James Suckling
"Dusty blackberries, sweet spices, cloves, grated sage, cedar and smoke - all of these can be found in the Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d'Asino 2019. Velvety, almost creamy yet lively, it washes over the palate with a dense wave of mineral-tinged dark red fruits underlined by salty minerals, all held together by a core of vibrant acidity. The finish is long and concentrated, with angular tannins that require patience to fully resolve. This is a glorious interpretation of the Vigna Schiena d'Asino." Vinous

Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna Loreto” DOCG 2019 · MAGNUM in OWC

Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna Schiena d’Asino” DOCG 2016 · 3 bottles in OWC

Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna Loreto” DOCG 2020 · 6 bottles in OWC

Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna Schiena d’Asino” DOCG 2019 · 6 bottles in OWC

![Mastrojanni](https://www.superiore.de/out/pictures/generated/category/thumb/338_338_100/toskana-montalcino-mastrojanni.jpg)
To press a Brunello with the fruit and elegance of a Bordeaux - this was the declared aim of the former Roman lawyer Gabriele Mastrojanni. The lover of wines from the Bordelais therefore founded an azienda south of the hilltop town of Montalcino in the most beautiful natural surroundings not far from Castelnuovo dell'Abate and started making wine himself. Since 1992 Andrea Machetti has been responsible for the renowned estate as Managing Director - first for Mastrojanni and later for the new owner, the Illy family. The coffee roasters from Trieste took over the winemaking business in 2008, after they had already taken over the Italian chocolate manufacturer Domori and the Parisian tea house Dammann. Francesco Illy, one of four grandsons of the company founder, has been working in the picturesque Tuscan wine village since 1997.
It is largely thanks to Machetti's enthusiasm that the historic winery, run today by Antonio Mastrojanni, has remained true to its tradition to this day. As a top oenologist, the soul of the famous wine house is supported by its long-standing friend Maurizio Castelli. The very loose, loamy and calcareous soils, the terrain protected from climatic attacks by Monte Amiata, the ideal south-southeast locations and a late harvest of perfect grapes regularly produce wines that have even gained in strength, clarity and concentration since the complete renewal of the plots by the new owners and the technical improvements in the cellar.
Main variety of Mastrojanni is and remains the Sangiovese for Brunello di Montalcino as well as the super drops Schiena d'Asino and Vigna Loreto (which is built in bigger barrels). In addition, a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon is reserved for the Cuvée San Pio. It is not until later that the estate decides which layers are to be used for Brunello or Rosso. Since the Rosso of the house also has a very high density and intensity, it would be insufficiently characterized as a base wine.
The Illy family has mainly invested in the basement. Fermentation plants were renewed and many medium-sized barrels were purchased. The style of the house is typical for the southwest of the Montalcino growing area: the wines are rich in extracts and tannins, and they are still a little rough when they are young. SUPERIORE.DE
"Andrea Machetti's confirmation at the head of the company is a clear signal of continuity, which can be found in the charismatic Brunello: substantial, tasty wines, as can be found in the vineyards of Castelnuovo dell' Abate can expect, but at the same time proud and limited to the essentials."Gambero Rosso
