Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2022 (BIO)
San Polino's Rosso di Montalcino offers a strong mineral signature over bright cherries, cassis and herbs. Elegant and attractively layered on the palate with fine-grained tannins. Fresh, juicy and light on the long finish, which is very animating. A stylish red that impresses with its unobtrusive style. SUPERIORE.DE

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019 (BIO)
Katia and Luigi's Brunello di Montalcino opens with dark fruits, cherries, forest herbs and dried plums. This is accompanied by a fine fruity sweetness, framed by notes of tar, smoke and exotic spices. The dark and ripe intensity of the fruit is closely interwoven with the flavours of oak and the stately proportions of the wine. The long and well-structured finish is characterised by liquorice and mint, flanked by a layer of fine tannins. What we particularly like about this Brunello is that it is already full of finesse and class and is already showing its beauty at a young age. SUPERIORE.DE
"Concentrated, wide-ranging ripe bouquet, delicately liqueur-like top note, but less invasive than usual, ripe cherries, blueberries, tobacco, chocolate, very complex and engaging. Juicy, concentrated and at the same time polished palate, powerful, polished fullness, concentrated final." Weinwisser
"Dark ruby red with a brick-coloured rim. Deep, seductive cherry nose with exotic spice notes. Powerful and long with juicy cherry fruit that is just beginning to unfold and fine-grained, enveloping tannins. Very balanced, but still needs to settle, so wait and see." Jancis Robinson
"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino smells of a dusty mix of dried flowers and strawberries underscored by lemon oil. It is racy and supple with cooling acidity and vibrant ripe wild berries lifted by orange and cedar spice. The acidity asserts itself and maintains an amazing freshness despite the grippy tannins that resonate throughout. The 2019 finishes long and colourful with a pretty hint of violet blossom that lingers for a long time. San Polino continues to raise the bar; this wine is wonderful." Vinous
"From the San Polino vineyards in the north-east on loamy clay soils. This exuberantly youthful and nascent 2019 is redolent of violets and oily balsamic herbs. It makes a medium-bodied impression - yet is packed with blackberry fruit. A hint of orange peel is emphasised by a zesty acidity. And when the wine opens up, spicy, steely depths emerge. Promising, but still needs to come together. Firm, loamy tannins weigh down the flavour on the finish." Decanter
"Intense aromas of black cherries, black truffle, orange peel and Indian spices. The palate is full yet restrained, with very fine tannins that penetrate the wine linearly and deeply. Lovely texture. Restrained on the finish. A true beauty." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino “Helichrysum” DOCG 2019 (BIO)
Helichrysum is a selection of the best grapes from the estate's highest parcel, where the soils are both clayey and of volcanic origin. It opens full-bodied and concentrated in the glass. On the palate, it has both spice and a multi-layered blend of red and black berries, which become more and more exciting towards the end. The somewhat darker and more velvety side of Sangiovese is wonderfully emphasised here, and thanks to its fresh acidity and tannin structure, it ideally presents all facets of the Tuscan flagship grape variety. Finally, traces of lavender, blackberries and a hint of salty liquorice linger on the dark and dramatic final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Intense, concentrated bouquet, ripe dark cherries, Amarena cherries, blue berries, lavender, overripe. Juicy, gripping palate with mineral pressure in the mid-palate, very well-developed tannins, very precise and powerfully arranged. I really like the tightly woven final with floral-spicy notes and dark red berry fruit." Weinwisser
"Very dark, almost impenetrable ruby red colour. Brooding dark fruit on the nose, which is still very closed and only hints at sour cherry. Increasingly complex with air, with exotic spice and cherry notes. Lots of sweet and sour cherry and raspberry fruit with gripping tannins that give it tension. Lots of juice and fruit intensity without being heavy. A real firecracker, but not yet ripe." Jancis Robinson
"A cooling, mentholated freshness introduces the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Helichrysum as flavours of black cherry, clove and dusty rose unfold in the glass. The Brunello di Montalcino Helichrysum is a paragon of purity and elegance, with a texture of pure silk and a depth of ripe wild berry flavours carried by a wave of vibrant acidity. The 2019 finishes incredibly long, structured and classically dry, but still fresh, leaving a saturation of red plum and liquorice under a floral air inside. The depth and concentration are unrivalled, while the helichrysum holds its power in reserve. Be patient with this wine. In a word: fantastic." Vinous
"With an unobstructed view of Monte Amiata in the south-east of Montalcino, the Helichrysum vineyards are characterised by dry, stony soils, winds from the Sahara and large temperature differences between day and night. Although the 2019 has the characteristic aroma of the vintage - and this location - it distributes it with measured precision. The subtle progression leads from camomile, liquorice and fennel to cocoa and tobacco. The palate is taut, compact and concentrated, but never heavy. A background of dark red cherries is interspersed with exotic spices, while tactile tannins envelop the core with a terracotta-like grip. Tuck this wine away for a few years." Decanter
"Lots of bark, wild flowers, black cherries, blackberries and baking spices on the nose. Full-bodied with layers of gorgeous tannins that coat the mouth and give a tantalising silky texture that is irresistible. Juicy finish." James Suckling

Limitation of 4 articles per customerBrunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2017 (BIO)
Dark bouquet of cherry and plum sauces mixed with cloves and grapefruit peel. This is pure elegance, rich and supple, even polished in feel, while masses of mineral-tinged red berries flow over a core of vibrant acidity. The tannins arrive late and intermingle with a concentrated layer of primary fruit, leaving a classically structured impression. It is already clear that this wine will make its fans very happy in a few years' time. SUPERIORE.DE
"Very dark ruby with narrow, bricky rim. Quite closed on the nose with just noticeable sweet cherry touches and a little lift. Massive, monolithic cherry fruit on the palate with tangy acidity creeping up on the finish. Bags of gravelly tannins that need the polish of time. Lots of potential, but still embryonic." Jancis Robinson
"San Polino’s Riserva was crafted from ‘one particular boat-rocker of a vat,’ according to proprietor, Katia Nussbaum. While she could have made 4,000 bottles, she blended most of it into the Helichrysum selection, keeping just 1,000 litres for this Riserva. It's a heady mix of cinnamon, allspice, vanilla and dried fennel. The palate is plentiful, with cherry compote, sweet herbs and a chalky structure. A slight dryness of tannins is countered by the sweet, ripe core and voluminous fruit. Perhaps not perfectly balanced, but crammed with boisterous, cheerful character." Vinous
"Sour cherries, licorice, lemon verbena and balsamic on the nose. There’s lavender and sandalwood, too. So much pure sangiovese character with tangy acidity and juicy sour and savory hints carrying this wine long. Firm, grippy tannins that are at the forefront for now. Give it a few years." San Polino brings together everything that characterises sustainable top quality. Katia Nussbaum and her husband Luigi Fabbro have dedicated themselves to an uncompromising version of biodynamic viticulture on their estate south-east of Montalcino. They founded their small vineyard together in 1994, which is surrounded by olive trees and was part of the medieval Santa Maria della Croce hospital in the 16th century.
In harmony with nature.
"We were actually biodynamic from day one," says Katia, who moved from England to Montalcino in the 1980s to be with Luigi. The restoration of the estate was followed by the exploration of the 35 hectares of land in order to better understand the interrelationships of the ecosystem. Today, only nine and a half hectares are cultivated, planted with Canaiolo, Colorino and Sangiovese vines. The rest consists of woodland and vast grasslands that benefit nature and provide natural corridors for animals and insects.
Diverse terroir in a small space.
The vineyards are spread over three different plots. The majority are located at a pleasantly breezy 350-450 metres above sea level right next to the winery and the rest in the north of Montalcino. The soil types in these areas range from former sea beds to volcanic subsoil, which is reflected in the flavour of the four San Polino wines.
From the vine to the bottle, the juicy, fresh Rosso di Montalcino and three marvellously fine Brunello di Montalcino wines are produced according to environmentally friendly principles. Chemicals are unthinkable for Katia and Luigi, which is why they fertilise the vineyard with their own compost made from grape skins and stalks, grass and manure. Grasses and beans are also planted in the vineyard to supply the soil with nitrogen. The wine is made in the small cellar under the family home, where the must is fermented into wine using wild yeasts.
Intergenerational, sustainable and excellent.
Ageing takes place mainly in used barriques and large wooden barrels, as the wood is ultimately not intended to impart any flavour, but only to influence the texture of the wine. After the maturation period, all the barrels are tasted several times by the family before the wines are bottled. The winery is firmly in family hands, Katia runs the winery with the support of her two sons Daniel and Giulio, so they are well prepared for the challenges of biodynamic production in the future. "At San Polino, we believe that the harmony of nature produces outstanding wines", says the small family winery – which we can confirm without a doubt. SUPERIORE.DE
