“Grecante” Grechetto Colli Martani DOC 2023
Tradition, innovation and typicity are the key words of the daily endeavours at the Arnaldo Caprai winery. And so this white wine from the old, indigenous Grechetto variety is traditional, straightforward and pleasantly drinkable - and anything but banal. SUPERIORE.DE
"Delicate straw yellow with greenish reflections. Restrained nose of gooseberry, citrus fruit and garden daisies. Surprisingly fruity-sweet on the palate with lively acidity. Salty, lingering final." Falstaff
"The 2023 Grecante is a real pleasure on the nose. It shows crushed rock, dusty dried flowers, lively fresh pears and yellow apples. It opens with a pleasant inner sweetness accompanied by crunchy fruit and a hint of sweet spice. Lively acidity provides fantastic balance and presence, while the 2023 tapers off with a subtle train of crisp tannins and a lemony concentration that slowly fades away." Vinous

Rosso Montefalco DOC 2022
Caprais Montefalco Rosso is an attractive red made predominantly from Sangiovese with small amounts of Sagrantino and Merlot. The aroma is unmistakably of black cherries and violets. Juicy and playful on the palate, with balanced acidity that enlivens the crisp red berry fruit, which leaves a slight mineral touch towards the end. Plenty of power and freshness, good structure, elegant on the finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark ruby red with a light, purple rim. Fragrant, fresh and fruity nose of crisp blackberries and blueberries, with savoury notes behind. On the palate with a sweet, fruity flavour and firm, spicy tannins, above-average length." Falstaff
"The wildly fresh 2022 Montefalco Rosso rises from the glass with a fragrant blend of wet stones, incense and lavender-flavoured blackberries. It is silky-smooth yet airy, with a texture of pure silk and ripe wild berries accompanied by cooling acidity. Chalky mineral tones and savoury spice linger as the 2022 finishes with powerful length, yet clean and precise. This is a wonderful introduction to the style of Arnaldo Caprai." Vinous
"Intense wine with aromas of blackberries, herbs and camphor. On the palate, it shows good fruit concentration, a medium body and fleshy, chewy tannins with a fairly dry finish, but good acidity." James Suckling

Rosso Riserva Montefalco DOC 2019
Deep violet-red in colour, the bouquet has nuances of juniper berries, tar, smoke and liquorice. The Montefalco Rosso Riserva is very juicy and offers an attractive combination of elegance and structure, rich flavours and polished tannins. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark ruby violet colour. Black pepper, curry, pickled cherries and very ripe plums on the nose, with a blackberry jam aftertaste. On the palate with grip and power, showing dark fruit and rich, tightly meshed tannins, currently still a baby, but will come together well, put away and enjoy fully in a few years." Falstaff
"On the nose, this wine shows intense aromas of red and black fruits, mixed with cocoa, allspice and dried flowers. On the palate, there is a lively acidity that emphasises the tart fruit notes. The taut palate suggests that some time in the cellar will be helpful." Wine Enthusiast
"Aromas of dried sage, coriander and dried plums. Full-bodied with firm tannins. Spicy. Expansive and dense, with layers of fruit and spice. Very good intensity and depth. Needs more time to develop." James Suckling
"The 2019 Montefalco Rosso Riserva shows us how much depth and complexity can be achieved with this combination of local varieties. The wine is intense and particularly concentrated thanks to ripe fruit and careful oak ageing. You can feel the power of the Sagrantino tannins, but this power is well measured and under control. With its dark and crisp fruit, this is a wine to savour." Wine Advocate

“Collepiano” Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG 2020
Aroma of dried black berries with nutty tones, tar, tobacco, candy, dark caramel and a light woody note. Powerful in the mouth, ripe, again partly dried fruit with a little cocoa-spicy wood flavours, slightly compote-like on the palate, dense and persistent, warming alcohol, present, predominantly crumbly tannin, some tar, behind it tobacco and herbs. Wonderful, partly salty finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Gently shimmering ruby colour with a dark core. Soft, inviting bouquet of stewed cherries and cocoa, some mocha in the aftertaste. Opens on the palate with dark fruit, covered in chocolate, then with velvety tannins, spicy and long." Falstaff
"A dark blend of wild blackberries, meat and graphite minerality. The austerity of the nose returns on the palate with firm, austere tannins, a full body and powerful acidity. The result is a very powerful style with a polished finish that reveals salt, chocolate and fruit." James Suckling

“Valdimaggio” Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG 2020
Black-red and almost impenetrable in the glass. Blackberry, black cherry, some rum pot and tobacco on the nose. Generous and ripe on the palate, flanked by taut tannins, which are pleasantly flanked by the fleshy core. Once again, Marco Caprai has succeeded in taming the Sagrantino grape and raising it to the highest heights - a grape variety that demands a great deal of sensitivity every year, even from the "bedrock" from Montefalco. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich, shimmering ruby colour with a narrow rim. Dark, sweet plum jam fruit on the nose, with balsamic notes and milk chocolate. Plucky tannins on the palate, juicy fruit underneath, long finish and plenty of potential." Falstaff
"A wine with a vibrant and complex nose of wild blackberries, flowers, earth and meat character. Austere palate with a full body, prominent tannins, refreshing acidity and a good, balanced finish." James Suckling
"The 2020 Montefalco Sagrantino Valdimaggio is dark and rich in the glass. Cherry and plum sauce mix with cinnamon, clove and dried roses. From start to finish, pure elegance swirls across the palate with velvety textures and admirable length, displaying depths of ripe wild berry fruits offset by tactile mineral tones and spice. A bitter blackberry concentration adds grip and poise. Fine tannins flex upon the senses. The 2020 finishes hauntingly long and youthfully tense. The single-vineyard Valdimaggio displays a classic refinement that will reward cellaring." Vinous

“25 Anni” Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG 2019
In the Sagrantino di Montefalco 25 Anni, all the elements of a wine full of character multiply exponentially: room-filling aromas of sweet berries, perfectly integrated wood tones, a cornucopia of ripe fruit on the palate, powerful and sensual. Caprai's top wine, which gives incredible pleasure and must be aerated for 3-4 hours when young. SUPERIORE.DE
"Ripe dark berries, chocolate, sweet spices, charred bark, walnuts and a hint of tar on the nose. Full and intense with depth and persistence in the fruit and firm, slightly chewy tannins. Long lasting and earthy finish." James Suckling
"A rich, medium to full-bodied red with a fragrant thread of chopped marjoram, orange peel and spice box that winds through concentrated flavours of reduced cherries, damson jam, red liquorice and tarry minerals. Firm and chewy, but balanced overall, with a tightly wound, well-spiced finish." Wine Spectator
"This darkly coloured wine opens with rich aromas of preserved blackberry, preserves, pepper and clove with a hint of violet. The powerful palate is layered with black plums, dried herbs, baking spices and forest floor, all framed by classically firm Sagrantino tannins and finishing with balanced acidity." Wine Enthusiast
"24 months in barriques for the 'definitive' Sagrantino, the culmination of years of research: sour cherry, balsamic notes and star anise, with a hint of wild iris, dense, juicy, savoury on the palate, with notes of undergrowth, black fruits and sweet spices." Luca Gardini
"Rich ruby red with a garnet-red rim. Intense and multi-layered on the nose, with notes of ripe blackberries and Amarena cherries, echoes of violets, dark chocolate and malt, slightly ethereal. Powerful but well-integrated tannins on the palate, builds up in a multi-layered way with a very long final." Falstaff
"The 2019 Sagrantino di Montefalco 25 Anni is imposing, buzzing with a dark mix of dried black cherries, crushed plums, sage, allspice and sweet mint. The texture is exciting, velvety yet cool, weighty yet tangy, washing over the palate with polished red and black fruits and slowly building black tea tannins. An abundance of spice, tobacco and blood orange nuances linger on the finish with tremendous length and concentration. The balance is absolutely fantastic. This is a breathtaking achievement." Vinous

“25 Anni” Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG 2020
The "25 Anni" from Caprai has been THE ambassador for Umbria's top wines for many years. It captivates with a beguiling bouquet that combines black fruits with citrus fruits, exotic spices, a hint of oregano, menthol and a hint of cocoa. The texture is more like pure silk that lays delicately across the palate, leaving a satisfying mix of intense dark fruits, minerals and fine-grained tannin. There is so much depth and concentration to work with that even when it finishes youthfully structured and dry, it lingers for well over a minute with notes of redcurrant, sage and dark chocolate. This exceptional Sagrantino is undisputedly not only Caprai's top wine, but also one of Italy's most characterful wines, which, with a little more ageing, is an incredible pleasure and should therefore definitely be aerated for 3-4 hours when young. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark, ruby-red centre with a brightening rim. Pronounced, complex bouquet with notes of juicy cherries and mulberries, followed by cocoa, pickled rose petals and leather. Silky on the palate, rich fruit, covered in chocolate, on powerful tannins, very long." Falstaff
"Balsamic spice mingles with cocoa and mentholated herbs as the dark and brooding 2020 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni slowly awakens in the glass. It is youthfully dense and velvety and flows across the palate like melted chocolate, with ripe wild berries contrasted by tangible minerals and spices. Its acidity provides fantastic balance, while the 2020 leaves a layer of sweet tannins and primary fruit flavours that finish long and pleasantly chewy. This is a much more approachable vintage, but no less complex." Vinous
"The nose is dominated by graphite, with restrained notes of wild blackberry, meat, balsamic and aromatic herbs. The attack is supple, with a full body, youthful fruit character and muscular but very fine tannins that combine with a refreshing acidity and a polished tobacco aftertaste. It needs another year or two of ageing to integrate the oak, but it will last for decades." James Suckling

“25 Anni” Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG 2019 · 6 bottles in OWC

“25 Anni” Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG 2020 · 6 bottles in OWC
If today the red wines from the Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG can compete with the wines of the Italian top class, this is primarily thanks to Arnaldo Caprai. The businessman from Umbria had the right nose right from the start and sensed that behind the intense colour, the concentration and the unrestrained tannin balance of the Sagrantino variety hid the conditions for an Umbrian success story. Caprai is to Montefalco Sagrantino what Angelo Gaja is to Piedmont and Biondi Santi is to Brunello.
As in so many success stories, the ancient grape variety had to live through controversial times. Viticulture in Umbria in the 1960s was still characterised by mass wine production. Money was earned with wines from which the Sagrantino was miles away: too strong and too much tannin, so that it could only be used to improve slim red wines or was bottled as a sweet wine. Its low yield was another reason for the farmers to devote themselves to growing more profitable grape varieties.
However, Arnaldo Caprai was in the right place at the right time: he was convinced that the small region and the Sagrantino native to it were not suitable for mass production. In 1971 he began to produce wines that would soon put the Montefalco wine region in a new light. With 45 hectares of vineyards, he fulfilled his dream of owning his own winery, in the middle of one of the most beautiful landscapes of central Italy.
Montefalco lies in the heart of Umbria. The gentle hills in which the vineyards are set are guarded by medieval castles and form a unique landscape. The vines grow on predominantly clay and limestone soils at an altitude of 200 to 470 metres above sea level. In addition to the Sagrantino, other grape varieties also thrive in Montefalco: Sangiovese plays the leading role in the delicately fruity Rosso Montefalco DOC. In addition, the local grape variety Grechetto produces impressive white wines and the historical, sweet and also highly sought-after version of the Sagrantino Passito embodies the over 400-year-old wine-growing culture of the region.
In 1988 his son Marco took over the management of the winery. At the age of 24, the second generation of the family begins to exploit the promising potential of sites and varieties in an innovative and above all sustainable manner. This is followed by major investments in the cellar and vineyards and a continuous collaboration with the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Oenology of the University of Milan to research optimal cultivation and production conditions.
In 1992, Marco plays a decisive role in the DOCG recognition of Montefalco Sagrantino. "This recognition enabled us to position the Sagrantino alongside great wines such as Barolo, Brunello and Chianti," says Marco Caprai. He produced the anniversary Riserva 25 Anni Sagrantino Montefalco DOCG in honour of the 25th anniversary of the company. And his constant work has borne fruit: the wine has been awarded the highest distinction of the Tre Bicchieri of the Gambero Rosso over ten consecutive years.
The Caprai family brought the potential of the production area with its enormous diversity to success and made the Sagrantino and the name Montefalco internationally known. The winery continues to work with unswerving passion for the sustainable production of outstanding wines and thus also for the continuation of the success story of Umbrian viticulture.
Arnaldo Caprai received in May 2023 the important award "'Welcome. Working for refugee integration" by the UNHCR. It is thus the only Italian winery that belongs to the circle of companies that contribute to a more inclusive society towards people who have had to flee war, violence and persecution.
Since 2016, Arnaldo Caprai has been working with Caritas of Foligno and other local associations that work to integrate migrants into the workforce: Over time, Arnaldo Caprai has given more than 200 refugees and asylum seekers the opportunity to find employment in the winery. This initiative has shown great success, as more than 60 percent of the migrants who have come to the company have obtained their residence permits in the following years and have found their position both in the workplace and, very importantly, in society.
"We are honored to have received this ethical and moral recognition," says Marco Caprai, "social responsibility is an important and serious issue for a company that really wants to be sustainable.". SUPERIORE.DE
