"The 2023 Bianco Secco is a traditional blend of Garganega, Trebbiano Toscano, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Saorin. This fifth grape variety is the local name for Tocai or Friuliano, and as far as I know, only the Quintarelli family still refers to it by its local name "Saorin". The wine is partly aged in oak, the rest in stainless steel tanks. A small percentage of the blend is appassimented. This is done by adding a small portion of the air-dried Passito Amabile del Cerè to this wine. The Bianco Secco offers plenty of sweet melon and peach with a medium-bodied texture. "The Recioto della Valpolicella Classico 2015 has a dark ruby red colour with purple reflections and is youthfully restrained, so it needs to develop in the glass. On swirling and with time, a spicier bouquet develops with exotic spices, balsamic notes and a hint of incense, followed by dried blueberries and violet pastilles. On the palate, it is a pure seduction that lays over the palate like silk, revealing an abundance of ripe black cherries and forest fruits, emphasised by a core of blood orange. The last time we saw it was in 2011. In terms of the 2015 vintage, it takes a little while before you recognize its sweetness. First impressions resolve around savory tones of Indian teak, resin and waxed furniture. "This pretty sweet wine is made with the same blend of grapes we saw in the table white Bianco Secco Ca' del Merlo. These are mostly Garganega, Trebbiano Toscano, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and the local Saorin grape (also known as Tocai or Friulano), only in this case they are air-dried in order to obtain elevated sugar and flavor concentration. The 2017 Passito Amabile del Cerè is waxy and rich in texture with compelling flavors of honey, brown sugar and marron glacé or chestnut confection. There is a dusting of something spicy like cinnamon or nutmeg. Those flavors are supported by 120 to 130 grams per liter of residual sugar, with the bright acidity to balance out the sweetness. "Made primarily with a blend of Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella, the Quintarelli Giuseppe 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva has been in bottle since November 2023. This is a wine of impact and intensity, with the textural heft and richness to match. This warm and sunny vintage delivers aromas of dried plum, sweet cigar, spice and brandied cherry. In terms of structure, the wine remains quite firm and compact, and this bodes especially well for its future bottle evolution. The name Tre Terre refers to the origin of the grapes for the Quintarelli family's new masterpiece: they come from the municipalities of Negrar, Marano and Sant'Ambrogio. Its style, with its more pronounced tannins, spiciness and tangy acidity, differs greatly from the winery's classic Amarone range. Red cherries and herbs come to the fore, and overall it has an astonishing minerality and objectivity for Amarone, which makes it more recognisable as an aristocratic Barolo than a more powerful Amarone. In the house of Quintarelli, each wine is given the time that is actually needed to later live up to the traditional name. In 60 years, thanks to his many secrets of success, the founder Giuseppe Quintarelli formed one of the most legendary wineries in Veneto. Since then, nothing has been left to chance. The commitment to quality includes every single step of production: from the vines to the oak barrels to the corks, the selected bottles and the hand-written label templates.
Giuseppe died in 2012 and the founder's considerable legacy is carried on today with the same passion by his daughter Fiorenza, son-in-law Giampaolo and grandsons Francesco and Lorenzo. North of Verona, narrow roads wind through the countryside to the small, well-hidden winery in the village of Negrar. A few hectares of vines thrive here in the best sites of the Valpolicella area on limestone and basalt soils.
The list of grape varieties planted is long, but yields are low: thanks to great skill, the Corvina, Molinara, Rondinella and Corvinone varieties produce outstanding Valpolicella Classico Superiore, unique Recioto della Valpolicella and particularly precious Amarone. For this purpose, selected grapes dry for months until fermentation in well-ventilated drying chambers (appassimento method) and thus experience a unique concentration of aromas.
The winery is considered one of the first to also use international grape varieties in the Valpolicella area and created great wines right away. In addition to the noble red wine selection, autochthonous white grape varieties such as Garganega, Trebbiano and Saorin meet a small amount of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc for the Bianco Secco IGP and the sweet Amabile del Cerè.
Giuseppe Quintarelli was a perfectionist in every sense of the word: the great "Maestro del Veneto" stipulated that his Amarone della Valpolicella should be produced only in the best years. His family says they are all obsessed with wine quality, and it is against this background that it becomes clear why these wines are still in a league of their own today.
Thanks to elaborate and largely manual production methods, the Guiseppe Quinatrelli family winery brings amazingly fresh, full-bodied and long-lasting wines to the market.
