“Nodi” Prosecco Spumante di Valdobbiadene Superiore DOCG 2020 brut
When Nino Franco discovered the Col del Vent vineyard in 2014, it was like a step back in time for him. He realised that the tiny plot above Valdobbiadene was home to 100-year-old vines of Glera biotypes that had long since been replaced by modern clonal selections in the region and were in an excellent state of health. The following year, with the help of Marco Simonit, a master of pruning (consultant to Yquem, Latour and Roederer), he produced the first wine from this vineyard. He called it Nodi (knot) in reference to the gnarled trunks of the old vines.
The noble Nodi impresses with its elegance and finesse and is always sold a good two years later. Delicate aromas of wisteria, flint and roses, with fruity notes of pear, gooseberry and lime. A fine, subtle perlage on the palate, with fresh notes of lime, peach and white fruit in combination with well-balanced acidity for a zesty and crisp flavour experience. For us, the perfect aperitif and, with just 6g of residual sugar, the first choice as an accompaniment to seafood. SUPERIORE.DE
"Intense, radiant straw yellow with a persistent, fine-grained perlage. Hints of white pepper, nutmeg, candied fruit and floral notes on the nose. On the palate with mouth-filling mousseux, electrifying acidity and a gentle lingering finish." Falstaff
"It shows a ripe character with notes of apple jam, dried orange peel and bread crust. Medium-bodied with crisp acidity and fine bubbles. It has a silky texture and a flavourful finish with a mineral note." James Suckling

“Grave di Stecca” Vino Spumante 2016 brut
Grave di Stecca is Nino Franco's exposed single vineyard on the slopes of the Prealpi. The south-facing vineyard is planted exclusively with the Prosecco grape Glera. Brilliantly shiny white gold, gently emerging perlage, a bouquet of sage with a fresh fruit scent. Very pleasantly dry on the palate, silky and long - the undisputed great top growth of the renowned Prosecco forge. SUPERIORE.DE
"Powerful bright lemon yellow with green accents. Distinctive aroma of delicate herbs (thyme), ripe pineapple and passion fruit, plus fine brioche notes and nut butter. Builds up richly, fills the entire palate, delicate and multi-layered in the drink, coherent, also complex and long-lasting in the finish." Falstaff
"Lush aromas of glazed apples and baked nectarines are well defined by a bright, lively acid structure in this elegant example. The texture is soft and creamy, with fragrant notes of lime zest, Earl Grey tea and graphite in the mid-palate and finish, with a hint of fleur de sel melting on the finish." Wine Spectator
"On the nose, a rich blend of cider apple, yuzu and hints of green tea and almond. Very fruity on the palate too, with a medium fizz and a tasty, spicy finish. Lots of character." James Suckling
"The 2016 Brut Grave di Stecca displays a brilliant golden colour in the glass, with a stunning bouquet of peach jam and sweetly spiced flowers, contrasted by wild herbs and crushed stone. The texture is creamy yet edgy, with zesty acidity that pinches the cheeks, but also an abundance of ripe fruit trees and floral scents that arch across the palate. It leaves a hint of ginger and a bitter hint of roasted hazelnuts, but the finish is one of cleansing freshness. The 2016 is not about power or fruit, but delicacy and graceful impact. I love it. Grave di Stecca is a single vineyard in the hills of Valdobbiadene with old Glera vines." Vinous
"Light and airy, this lovely sparkling wine has inviting aromas of ripe white stone fruit, spring flowers and baking spices. On the dry, foamy palate, elegant perlage and fresh acidity accompany ripe yellow apples, Bartlett pear, vanilla cake cream and a hint of white almond." Wine Enthusiast
"Grave di Stecca represents both the best of Prosecco – specifically Valdobbiadene – and the best of what is not ‘Prosecco’; the authorities refused to certify it as DOCG due to its atypical style, so to this day Nino Franco bottles it as a vino spumante in protest. The grapes are sourced from the walled Grave di Stecca vineyard, the site of the family residence, purchased by Franco in 1991. Super-aromatic and exotically scented, with passion fruit and ripe banana, in the mouth it’s very mineral and earthy, intense and rich but well sculpted. Tropical and spicy, it’s slightly creamy – almost mushroomy – with a lip-smacking saline finish. This wine can age well thanks to extended lees ageing of the base wines then long maturation in bottle before release." Decanter

Primo Franco has always been very interested in architecture. Fortunately for the wine lovers, however, he has chosen a completely different professional path. As a producer of high-class sparkling wines, however, the manager of the small winery Nino Franco has retained the joy of clear lines to this day, as the octagonal office building also proves. Primo had the great idea in the 1970s to devote himself practically entirely to the production of Prosecco in various variations. From 1982 onwards, he even succeeded in advancing to the highest Italian wine league with the family business Valdobbiadene, now almost one hundred years old and situated in the heart of the enchanting municipality of Valdobbiadene on the edge of the foothills of the Alps. The international reputation of the house, founded by Nino Franco's father Antonio, has continued to grow despite high-class competition. The top ambassador of Prosecco from the Venetian province of Treviso has remained true to his style: To produce fresh and uncomplicated sparkling wines, which clearly differ from everyday products in their quality. His wife Anneliese and daughter Silvia actively support Primo Franco in his work.
Nino and Primo, descendants of their ancestor, gradually expanded the company located in Via Garibaldi in order to increase production capacity. In the course of time a lot of money was invested in modern facilities. Wines untypical for the region have been removed from the bottle rack. The estate has always carried out experiments aimed at reducing human intervention in the cellar, but also at highlighting the character of the Glera grape variety and the prestige of the area. As sales manager, Primo had in earlier years even spontaneously traveled through South America, the United States, Canada and the Far East to charmingly and competently present his latest products far from home. Today, the annual production of about one million bottles is also ensured by numerous reliable grape suppliers who are looked after all year round. Otherwise, the proportion of fruit from their own vineyards would only be sufficient for the top products of the Prosecco House.
With their brown and red layers, the stony and calcareous soils of the Veneto offer extremely favourable growing conditions for the Glera vine. The light and plain Prosecchi produced by Primo Franco do not bend to traditional rules, but are above all an expression of his personality. They have a high recognition value and ideally have an intense, luxuriant fruity note. Ratings of important wine critics testify to the high level of the noble foamers.
A new chapter begins for the winery in 2024, when Nino Franco Spumanti officially became a Benefit Corporation. This international movement connects companies on their way to a responsible future in business. The winery explains the reasons for this step as follows: "It is the beginning of a new era that embodies a responsibility that has always been close to our hearts: our mission to have a positive impact on society and the environment. Becoming a not-for-profit company means that we are formally committed to operating responsibly, sustainably and transparently to improve the wellbeing of people and the planet. (...) Together we can make a real difference!" SUPERIORE.DE
"Readers who want to discover Prosecco in best quality should put this good at the top of their shopping lists."Robert Parker
"Primo Franco's company has a special position in Prosecco because it can represent the historical bubbles of Valdobbiadene all over the world, although it is completely different from the others. The originality also lies in the fact that the otherwise most common Extra Dry is not available in the range."Gambero Rosso
